This role leads a team of Tax Associates delivering complex sales tax compliance services across multiple jurisdictions.
You will oversee sales tax risk assessments, voluntary disclosure agreements, and historical compliance engagements while maintaining high standards for quality and client service.
The position combines people leadership, operational management, tax expertise, and process improvement in a fast-paced professional services environment.
You will help ensure consistent turnaround times, accurate filings, effective capacity management, and a reliable customer experience.
A key part of the role is identifying opportunities to use automation and AI to improve productivity, accuracy, and scalability.
You will also collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and serve as an escalation point for complex client and state authority matters.

Accountabilities:
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of Tax Associates responsible for sales tax risk assessments, voluntary disclosure agreements, and historical compliance filings across multiple states.
- Establish clear expectations and hold the team accountable for client response standards, including 48-hour turnaround commitments and timely submission of state filings and returns.
- Lead hiring, onboarding, and structured training programs for new team members while identifying and developing high-potential talent.
- Serve as the escalation point for complex client issues, state taxing authority inquiries, and cross-functional questions that require management intervention.
- Partner with the Practice Director on capacity planning, operational reporting, billing oversight, and overall practice performance.
- Document, standardize, and continuously improve team processes to ensure consistent quality and customer experiences.
- Identify, pilot, implement, and scale automation and AI-assisted solutions for activities such as data validation, status tracking, research, documentation, and template generation.
- Measure the impact of AI and automation initiatives on productivity, quality, and scalability, and share successful practices across the broader organization.
- Use AI-enabled tools and data analysis to improve management effectiveness, identify workload trends, and proactively address operational challenges.
- Maintain strong working relationships with Project Managers, Data Consultants, Tax Associates, State Activities teams, Tax Directors, Sales, and Account Management.
- Ensure teams remain aligned on project scope, timelines, risks, responsibilities, and client outcomes.
- Maintain accurate and current process documentation covering data intake, nexus validation, account reconciliation, disclosure submissions, return preparation, notice handling, and file closeout.
- Act as a subject-matter resource for other Professional Services teams when needed.
- Share operational insights, tools, and process improvements with leadership to strengthen performance across the broader practice.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of sales and use tax consulting or compliance experience, including experience leading a team or serving in a team lead capacity.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience working with data transformation and analysis.
- Ability to interpret data effectively and translate findings into meaningful business insights.
- Hands-on experience using Salesforce or a comparable CRM or project management platform to manage pipelines, tasks, and reporting.
- Demonstrated experience using AI tools to improve the speed, accuracy, scalability, research, documentation, data analysis, or reporting of team activities.
- Ability to coach and support colleagues in adopting AI-enabled tools and integrating them effectively into daily workflows.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate with clients, state taxing authorities, Sales, Operations, and other internal stakeholders.
- Strong quality orientation and professional standards, with the ability to establish expectations and hold others accountable.
- Preferred experience managing the full voluntary compliance process, including nexus studies, voluntary disclosure agreements, and sales tax risk assessments across multiple states and local jurisdictions.
- Preferred experience in regional or national public accounting, particularly within a state and local tax practice.
- Experience managing distributed teams across different locations or time zones is preferred.
- Strong leadership, coaching, problem-solving, organization, and stakeholder management skills.
