Profile match
Jobgether is a Belgian recruitment platform built entirely around remote and flexible work, aggregating openings from thousands of employers that allow work from outside an office. Its matching engine ranks roles against a candidate's skills, seniority and stated preferences on location and flexibility, rather than leaving people to filter a keyword search, and it verifies how genuinely remote each posting is. The company also runs an AI screening layer that shortlists applicants for employers, and publishes research and guidance on distributed work practices alongside the job marketplace itself.

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Ubuntu Software Engineer based in United Kingdom.

Join a globally distributed engineering environment working on one of the world’s most widely adopted open source operating systems.

This role offers the opportunity to contribute across the Ubuntu Engineering organization, from foundational systems and server technologies to desktop platforms and archive maintenance.

You will design, build, package, test, integrate, and ship software that supports millions of users worldwide.

Depending on your expertise, you may work with Rust, Go, Python, Flutter, C/C++, Linux distributions, packaging systems, or build automation.

The position combines hands-on software engineering with system-level problem solving and collaboration across a global open source community.

You will have opportunities to contribute upstream, improve engineering processes, document technical solutions, and mentor colleagues.

This is an ideal opportunity for a mid-career engineer who wants to deepen their technical expertise while making a meaningful impact on open source software.

Accountabilities:

    • Design, develop, test, and ship new foundational systems software and applications using technologies such as Rust, Go, Python, Flutter, and C/C++.
    • Package, integrate, test, maintain, and upload open source software to Ubuntu repositories using Debian and Snap packaging mechanisms.
    • Engineer integrations across the software stack, from boot firmware and core system components to cloud application deployments.
    • Build and maintain automation and engineering infrastructure responsible for building, testing, and shipping Ubuntu.
    • Contribute to the maintenance, evolution, and overall quality of a Linux distribution and its repositories.
    • Investigate and resolve system-level issues, delivering reliable, robust, and maintainable solutions.
    • Author and improve technical documentation and community documentation to support users and fellow engineers.
    • Contribute to upstream and related open source projects while actively participating in the broader open source community.
    • Collaborate effectively within a globally distributed engineering organization and share knowledge by mentoring colleagues.
    • Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes and increase the efficiency and quality of software delivery.
    • Requirements:

      • 2-4 years of professional software engineering experience after completing university, with a demonstrated record of delivering high-quality technical work.
      • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a related discipline, or a compelling alternative professional or educational background.
      • Strong academic performance and a demonstrated drive to exceed expectations.
      • Significant hands-on experience with at least one of Rust, Go, Python, Flutter, or C/C++.
      • Genuine passion for open source software and an interest in contributing to large-scale open source projects.
      • Professional proficiency in written and spoken English, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
      • Ability to work effectively in a globally distributed environment and collaborate across teams and cultures.
      • Willingness and ability to travel internationally approximately twice per year for company events lasting up to two weeks.
      • Experience with Linux distributions and distribution engineering is highly desirable.
      • Knowledge of software packaging and distribution mechanisms is an advantage.
      • Understanding of build systems, toolchains, and cross-compilation is beneficial.
      • Experience in performance engineering or security engineering is a plus.
      • Benefits:

        • Distributed work environment with opportunities to collaborate in person during twice-yearly team sprints.
        • Compensation determined according to geographical location, experience, and performance.
        • Annual compensation reviews, with more frequent reviews where appropriate for graduates and associates.
        • Performance-driven annual bonus.
        • USD 2,000 annual personal learning and development budget.
        • Recognition rewards for outstanding contributions.
        • Annual holiday leave.
        • Maternity and paternity leave.
        • Team Member Assistance Program and Wellness Platform.
        • Opportunities to travel to new locations and meet colleagues from around the world.
        • Priority Pass access and travel upgrades for long-haul company events.
