At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.\nOverview\nThe Systems Engineers will own the architecture, integration, and life-cycle success of a single or multiple avionics systems, ranging from requirements management, development, certification, and entry into service.\nJoby Aviation’s flight research team is looking for a passionate Senior Autonomy Systems Engineer to join our growing team. This is a position that provides the engineer a chance to interact with many of the key teams and disciplines within the company. The Senior Systems Engineer will provide technical guidance and coordination across the Autonomy Systems. This role will own the architecture, integration, and life-cycle success of the autonomy system, ranging from requirements management, development, certification, and entry into service. This role will be responsible for leading the development and certification of systems and sub-systems and ensuring successful design validation and verification. The Senior Systems Engineer will work very closely with Software, Hardware and GNC teams to ensure the avionics systems meet the needs of the program.\nThis position requires a solid understanding of aircraft systems, system development, and industry specific certification processes. This position requires enough background knowledge and a willingness to learn to enable one to understand the complex trade-offs involved in the system design both within Avionics and across the aircraft systems as a whole.\nThe most important traits at Joby are a positive attitude towards the project, strong work ethic, and being able to self-manage and learn new skills. Forward thinking and the ability to adapt quickly to a fast-paced environment are a must.\nResponsibilities\nSystems Architecture & Requirement Ownership: Lead the definition and management of system-level requirements and traceability. You don’t just write requirements; you define the hierarchy and validation methods using tools like Jama, Polarion, or Flow.\nConduct Trade Studies: Evaluate architectures and specific component options against considerations such as functional assessment, cost, mass, reliability, and performance at the component and aircraft level. Lead make versus buy decisions. Engage with external vendors.\nSafety & Reliability Leadership: Drive System Safety Assessments (SSA), Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA), and Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) for complex autonomous systems.\nCross-Functional Integration: Serve as the \"glue\" between specialized teams (Software, Hardware, Flight Controls, and GCS) to adapt the Joby hardware and software stack to new configurations and applications.\nV&V Strategy (Verification & Validation): Define the master verification plan. You determine which requirements are met through simulation, HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) testing, and/or light testing.\nFlight Readiness Authority: Lead the Technical Readiness Reviews (TRR) and Flight Readiness Reviews (FRR). You provide the analytical \"green light\" that the aircraft systems are safe to transition to the flight test team.\nMentorship: Act as a lead for project specific systems engineers, reviewing their work, defining project level best practices, and standardizing engineering workflows.\n\nRequired\nBS in Aerospace, Systems, or Electrical Engineering (or related)\n8+ years in aerospace systems engineering \nSystems engineering experience developing complex, safety-critical vehicles, with depth on at least one side of the V and a clear desire to grow into full-V ownership\nThorough understanding of systems engineering concepts and methods, including system-level requirements definition, traceability, and validation\nExperience with safety and reliability analyses such as System Safety Assessments (SSA), Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA), and FMECA\nProficiency with requirements management and traceability tools (e.g., Jama, Polarion, DOORS)\n This position must meet US export control compliance requirements, therefore a candidate must qualify as a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15. “US Person” includes US Citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, or asylees.\nDesired\nDemonstrated full-V experience developing complex, safety-critical vehicles\nMS/PhD in engineering\nExperience with autonomous system logic, Command & Control (C2) link reliability, and GCS integration for Group 3-5 UAS\nExperience with digital flight control systems\nExperience with aircraft certification development and test processes (ARP4754, DO-178C, DO-254, DO-160)\nMBSE experience and tool proficiency (e.g., Cameo/MagicDraw, Capella, Rhapsody)\nDemonstrated success in clean-sheet aerospace development\nExperience leading Technical Readiness Reviews (TRR) and Flight Readiness Reviews (FRR)\nExperience mentoring systems engineers and standardizing engineering workflows\nAdditional Information\nCompensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $161,400 - $222,000/yr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.\nJoby also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan with a company match, an employee stock purchase plan (ESPP), short-term and long-term disability coverage, life insurance, and more.\nJoby Aviation is an equal opportunity employer.","description_format":"text","description_chars":5888,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":8,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"bachelor","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Life insurance","Restricted stock units"],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Air Transport","Aircraft Manufacturing"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-26T20:24:51Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":90,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.903,"p_room":1,"age_days":2,"expected_fill_days":16,"reasons":["conf:3","velocity","win:early","comp:brand"],"computed_at":"2026-10-29T05:49:05Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":222000,"is_top_pay":true},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/joby-aviation-senior-autonomy-systems-engineer","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/joby-aviation-senior-autonomy-systems-engineer.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-29T22:09:26Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":32734,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-30T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":176372},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=176372"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fjoby-aviation-senior-autonomy-systems-engineer"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fjoby-aviation-senior-autonomy-systems-engineer"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fjoby-aviation-senior-autonomy-systems-engineer"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/joby-aviation-senior-autonomy-systems-engineer\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fjoby-aviation-senior-autonomy-systems-engineer"}],"agent":{"mcp":"https://alion.io/mcp/jobs","mcp_open":"https://alion.io/mcp/open","next":[{"tool":"get_job","arguments":{"id":3291969}},{"tool":"search_jobs","arguments":{"company":"jobyaviation.com","detail":"compact"}},{"tool":"match_people","arguments":{"job_id":3291969},"note":"people open to offers who fit this vacancy"}],"note":"The same data through MCP tools: https://alion.io/mcp/open needs no sign-in (compact searches, postings, people); https://alion.io/mcp with an Alion account has everything.
