Staff Software Engineer

We are seeking a high-calibre Staff Software Engineer (5-7 years of experience) to drive technical excellence. This is a hands-on individual contributor role where you will design and operate large-scale systems that move real money. You will act as the technical anchor for a critical project pod, balancing deep engineering work with architectural leadership. As a Staff Engineer, you will solve complex technical problems, shape architecture across frontend and backend, and elevate engineering standards for your team. You will work closely with senior engineers, engineering leadership, and product stakeholders to drive long-term technical excellence.

The candidate will have responsibilities across the following functions:

Architecture and Strategy:

• Define and evolve end-to-end system architecture across frontend and backend.
• Drive long-term technical strategy aligned with product and business goals.
• Identify systemic risks, bottlenecks, and scaling challenges early.

Execution and Leadership:

• Build and review critical parts of the system across frontend and backend.
• Set high standards for code quality, performance, and reliability.
• Lead by example through high-quality technical contributions.

Engineering Standards:

• Act as a technical advisor to the team.
• Lead design reviews for complex, key technical initiatives.
• Influence standards around APIs, data models, frontend architecture, and tooling.

Quality, Reliability and Scale:

• Ensure systems are resilient, observable, and production-ready.
• Drive best practices around testing, monitoring, and incident prevention.
• Champion simplicity and long-term maintainability.

Mentorship and Engineering Excellence:

• Mentor senior and staff-level engineers.
• Raise the engineering bar through reviews, guidance, and shared learnings.
• Contribute to defining what great engineering looks like at Jodo.

Collaboration and Influence:

• Partner closely with product, design, DevOps, and leadership teams.
• Communicate technical trade-offs clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
• Influence without authority through trust, clarity, and technical depth.

Requirements:

• 5-7 years of experience in software engineering.
• Proven experience designing and scaling complex systems.
• Strong track record as a senior individual contributor.
• Strong backend expertise (Python preferred, Go, Node.js, or similar).
• Strong frontend expertise with modern frameworks (React preferred).
• Deep understanding of APIs, data flows, and distributed systems.
• Experience designing systems for high availability and performance.
• Strong understanding of trade-offs in distributed systems.
• Experience handling large codebases and complex domains.
• Strong experience with testing strategies, CI/CD, and production operations.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms and modern DevOps practices.
• Systems thinker with a bias for clarity and simplicity.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Comfortable operating in ambiguity and driving alignment.
