In this role, you will contribute directly to the safety, reliability, and market access of products used by customers around the world.\nOverview\nJohnson Controls is seeking a Regulatory Engineer to support product safety, regulatory compliance, and agency certification activities for our chiller products. This role is designed for an engineer with 2 to 4 years of relevant experience who is ready to apply engineering fundamentals while developing deeper expertise in product compliance and certification.\nWorking with senior regulatory engineers, product engineers, manufacturing teams, and external certification bodies, you will support compliance activities across the product lifecycle, from requirements identification and design review through testing, documentation, production release, and sustaining support. You will be expected to manage defined work assignments independently, raise risks promptly, and contribute to cross-regional compliance projects.\nJohnson Controls delivers products to markets worldwide. This role primarily supports North American requirements while collaborating with regulatory counterparts in the United States, Europe, and Asia-Pacific when global standards or certification needs overlap.\nThis role is preferred to sit in New Freedom, PA but is open to remote candidates.\nKey Responsibilities\nSupport regulatory compliance planning and execution for new product introduction and sustaining engineering projects.\nReview product requirements, drawings, bills of material, technical specifications, and design changes for compliance implications.\nInterpret and apply applicable safety standards, directives, codes, and regulations with guidance from senior regulatory staff.\nCoordinate assigned portions of agency certification projects, including submission packages, product samples, test scheduling, issue tracking, and closure documentation.\nAssist with product safety risk assessments, hazard analyses, design reviews, and compliance checklists.\nWork with internal laboratories and external agencies such as UL and CSA Group to support testing and resolve findings.\nPrepare, organize, and maintain technical files, declarations, certificates, test reports, and other compliance records.\nSupport investigation and resolution of compliance issues identified during development, testing, manufacturing, audits, or field support.\nMonitor relevant standards and regulatory changes, summarize potential product impacts, and escalate significant changes to senior regulatory engineers.\nBuild effective working relationships with product engineering, component engineering, manufacturing, quality, sourcing, and regional compliance teams.\nContribute to continuous improvement of compliance tools, templates, work instructions, and document-control practices.\nParticipate in selected industry or standards meetings as assigned and provide clear summaries of actions and implications.\nRegional Compliance Requirements\nThe Regulatory Engineer will develop working knowledge of applicable requirements, including:\nNorth America: applicable UL and CSA product safety standards, UL 60335-2-40, FCC Part 15, ICES-003, EPA SNAP, U.S. Department of Energy requirements, and relevant ASHRAE and AHRI standards.\nGlobal: IEC and ISO standards and the IECEE CB Scheme.\nRequired Qualifications\nBachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, controls, systems, or a related engineering discipline.\n2 to 4 years of engineering experience in product development, product safety, regulatory compliance, certification testing, quality, or a related technical field.\nFoundational knowledge of engineering drawings, product specifications, laboratory testing, and technical documentation.\nAbility to read and apply technical standards and translate requirements into clear engineering actions.\nExperience supporting multiple assignments, tracking actions, and meeting project schedules.\nStrong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document test results, compliance decisions, and open issues clearly.\nAnalytical problem-solving skills and the ability to investigate failures or nonconformities with cross-functional teams.\nAbility to work independently on defined tasks while seeking guidance when requirements, risk, or precedent are unclear.\nAbility to travel up to 25% for project support, factory visits, laboratory testing, and codes and standards meetings.\nPreferred Qualifications\nExperience with HVAC, refrigeration, chillers, building systems, controls, or related electromechanical products.\nExposure to UL, CSA, IEC, CE or CB Scheme certification processes.\nExperience working with a nationally recognized testing laboratory or other third-party certification body.\nFamiliarity with product risk assessment, hazard analysis, failure investigation, or design verification methods.\nWorking knowledge of ISO 9001 quality management systems and document-control practices.\nBasic understanding of software, firmware, electrical controls, or electromagnetic compatibility as they relate to product compliance.\nEngineer-in-Training certification or relevant product safety or compliance training.\nSuccess in This Role\nCompletes assigned compliance deliverables accurately and on schedule.\nIdentifies potential certification or regulatory risks early and communicates them clearly.\nMaintains complete, traceable, and audit-ready technical documentation.\nBuilds increasing independence and technical depth in applicable chiller standards and certification processes.\nCollaborates effectively across engineering, manufacturing, quality, sourcing, and external agencies.\nHIRING SALARY RANGE: $90,000 - $125,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge,skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
