Data Center Electrical Engineer

Position Overview

The Data Center Electrical Engineer is responsible for implementing, maintaining, and optimizing electrical systems and critical power infrastructure within mission-critical data center environments. This role ensures maximum uptime, reliability, and efficiency of power distribution systems while supporting the continuous operation of IT equipment and maintaining compliance with industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

Critical Power Systems

Responsible for operations and maintenance of equipments and electrical infrastructure within data center. Support retrofits including medium voltage systems, transformers, switchgear, and power distribution. Develop electrical single-line diagrams, riser diagrams, panel schedules, and equipment layouts. Identify and report SPOFs within redundant power architectures (N, N+1, 2N) to meet Tier II, III, or IV certification requirements. Calculate load requirements, power densities, and capacity planning for current and future IT infrastructure needs.

Power Distribution and UPS Management

Oversee design and operation of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems including configuration, sizing, and redundancy schemes. Manage power distribution units (PDUs), remote power panels (RPPs), and branch circuit distribution. Implement power monitoring systems and DCIM platforms for real-time visibility into power consumption and capacity. Optimize power distribution efficiency and reduce energy losses throughout the electrical infrastructure.

Generator and Backup Power Systems

Operate and maintain backup generator systems including fuel systems, automatic transfer switches (ATS), and paralleling switchgear. Conduct load bank testing, generator commissioning, and regular preventive maintenance activities. Ensure seamless failover capabilities and validate backup power runtime calculations. Manage generator fuel supply contracts and emergency fuel delivery protocols.

Operations and Maintenance

Perform routine inspections, testing, and preventive maintenance on electrical equipment including switchgear, transformers, UPS systems, and distribution panels. Troubleshoot electrical faults, power quality issues, and equipment failures with minimal downtime impact. Coordinate maintenance windows and implement change management procedures for electrical system modifications. Monitor power quality metrics including voltage, frequency, harmonics, and power factor.

Capacity Planning and Analytics

Analyze power consumption trends and forecast future capacity requirements. Develop capacity models and utilization reports for executive leadership and client stakeholders. Identify stranded capacity and optimization opportunities to maximize infrastructure efficiency. Plan electrical infrastructure upgrades to support data center growth and evolving technology requirements.

Project Engineering and Implementation

Lead electrical engineering aspects of data center projects from design through commissioning. Coordinate with MEP contractors, equipment vendors, and internal teams to ensure successful project delivery. Review shop drawings, submittals, and equipment specifications for compliance with design requirements. Conduct site inspections during construction and verify installation quality and code compliance.

Compliance and Documentation

Ensure compliance with NEC, NFPA, IEEE, and local electrical codes and standards. Maintain accurate as-built drawings, equipment documentation, and maintenance records. Develop and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) for electrical systems operation and maintenance. Coordinate with regulatory authorities for inspections, permits, and compliance documentation.

Vendor and Contractor Management

Manage relationships with electrical equipment manufacturers, service providers, and maintenance contractors. Oversee service level agreements and ensure vendor performance meets operational requirements. Coordinate with OEM representatives for equipment warranty, upgrades, and technical support. Evaluate new technologies and equipment for potential implementation in data center infrastructure.

Change Management Requirements

Change Request Handling: Datacenter engineers must initiate, document, and track all infrastructure changes through the formal change management process. This includes hardware installations, network modifications, configuration updates, and system upgrades. Each change requires comprehensive documentation detailing the scope, impact assessment, implementation plan, rollback procedures, and testing validation.

Change Advisory Board (CAB) Participation: Engineers are expected to participate in CAB meetings, presenting technical details of proposed changes and addressing questions from stakeholders. They must provide risk assessments and demonstrate alignment with business objectives and maintenance windows.

Implementation and Documentation: Execute approved changes according to scheduled maintenance windows, following documented procedures precisely. Maintain detailed implementation logs, capture before-and-after configurations, and update asset management systems and configuration management databases (CMDB) to reflect current state.

Post-Implementation Review: Complete post-change validation testing to confirm successful implementation and document outcomes. Report any deviations from expected results and ensure proper closure of change tickets with lessons learned documentation.

Incident Management Requirements

Incident Detection and Response: Respond promptly to datacenter incidents including hardware failures, environmental alerts, power disruptions, cooling system issues, and network outages. Acknowledge incidents within defined SLA timeframes and begin initial triage immediately.

Incident Classification and Prioritization: Assess incident severity based on business impact and urgency. Properly categorize incidents (hardware, network, environmental, security) and escalate critical issues according to established escalation matrices. Priority 1 incidents require immediate attention regardless of time of day.

Root Cause Analysis: Conduct thorough investigation to identify root causes rather than addressing symptoms only. Document findings, contributing factors, and failure patterns to prevent recurrence. Collaborate with vendors and internal teams as needed for complex issues.

Communication and Reporting: Maintain regular communication with stakeholders during incident resolution. Provide status updates at defined intervals, manage expectations regarding resolution timeframes, and ensure proper notification when incidents are resolved. Complete detailed incident reports documenting timeline, actions taken, root cause, and preventive measures.

Knowledge Management: Contribute to the knowledge base by documenting incident resolutions, creating troubleshooting guides, and sharing lessons learned. This builds organizational capability and reduces resolution time for future similar incidents.

Required Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program required. Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field preferred for senior positions.
