As an intern, you won’t be doing “practice tasks” - you’ll work on real features and systems alongside experienced engineers, contributing to products used by real users in production!\nThis internship is open to students, recent graduates, or anyone looking to grow their backend skills in a production environment. We’re unable to sponsor visas, so you’ll need a valid EU work permit and to be based in Vienna. The internship requires a minimum of 32 hours per week, which means we can’t consider candidates on a student visa, as these are limited to 20 hours per week.\nPlease note: The internship runs for 4-6 months. We’ll agree on the start date during the process, though we’re aiming for as soon as possible.\nWhat you'll do\nContribute to the Photobook software solution written in Scala, powered by Journi's own machine learning driven Layouting Algorithm\n\nSupport the development of new features and REST APIs used by millions of users\n\nCollaborate closely with engineers (Frontend, Backend, Machine-Learning), product designers, and product managers\n\nWork on improving the performance, scalability, and reliability of our systems\n\nHelp identify bugs, technical debt, and areas for improvement - and be part of fixing them\n\nWrite clean, maintainable code and contribute to code reviews\n\nLearn how production systems are built, tested, and deployed\n\nYour bag of tricks\nBasic to intermediate experience in backend development (through studies, internships, or personal projects)\n\nFamiliarity with at least one JVM language (Java, Kotlin, or Scala) (No Scala experience? No problem - as long as you’re excited to learn it!)\n\nUnderstanding of REST APIs and how web applications communicate\n\nBasic knowledge of databases (SQL or NoSQL) and/or software algorithms\n\nSome exposure to Git and collaborative development workflows\n\nCuriosity, ownership, and a willingness to learn by doing\n\nGood communication skills and a collaborative mindset\n\nYou have the right to work in the EU/Austria and are based in Vienna or open to relocating\n\nNice-to-haves\nSome experience with PostgreSQL, Redis\n\nInterest in (code) performance optimisations, genetic algorithms\n\nPersonal or academic projects (GitHub links welcome!)\n\nDedication to dive into complex code\n\nWhat we offer\nA happy team makes for a happy workplace.
