Senior Mainframe Software Engineer

Job Summary :

We are seeking a highly technical Senior Mainframe Software Engineer to lead the development, enhancement, and optimization of our high-volume, business-critical core transactional applications. In this role, you will balance deep, hands-on production engineering across complex batch and real-time online processing architectures with forward-looking application modernization initiatives.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned Level 3 engineer who bridges the gap between traditional legacy transaction environments and modern cloud runtime frameworks. You will be responsible for engineering robust sub-systems using COBOL, DB2, and IMS DB/DC architectures, deploying advanced sequential data handling via GSAM, debugging critical components using IBM diagnostic suites, and collaborating with cross-functional architects to prepare core data blocks for integration with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Large Language Model (LLM) analytical tools.

Key Responsibilities :

- Core Mainframe Engineering : Design, build, test, and optimize complex transactional solutions and high-volume batch applications utilizing COBOL, JCL, and DB2.

- IMS Sub-System Mastery : Architect and maintain robust database and communications layers utilizing IMS DB (Database), IMS DC (Data Communications), and specialized GSAM sequential access methods.

- Diagnostic Troubleshooting : Serve as the senior point of technical escalation for production anomalies; execute deep code debugging, profiling, and patching utilizing the IBM DEBUG Tool, IBM File Manager, and SELCOPY.

- Modernization & Intelligent Systems : Partner with cloud architects to build next-generation data pathways, exploring the integration of core application logic with GCP Cloud Run, Web Services (z/OS Connect), MQ Series, or AI-driven expert systems.

- Ecosystem Interoperability : Leverage foundational knowledge of procurement and supply chain systems (such as SAP Ariba or S/4HANA) to align mainframe inventory/purchasing pipelines with corporate business benchmarks.

- Agile Governance & Quality : Actively manage iteration deliverables within an Agile development methodology, conducting comprehensive code reviews, writing detailed technical runbooks, and taking self-driven initiative to solve unexpected performance bottlenecks.

Skills & Qualifications :

Required Technical DNA :

- Primary Core Stack : Advanced analysis and development mastery in COBOL, IMSDB, DB2, JCL, and GSAM processing lines.

- Secondary Systems : Hands-on programming and transaction tracking experience inside IMS DC, IBM DEBUG Tool, and IBM File Manager.

- Tenure : 6+ years of total IT experience, with at least 4 years spent in active, mainstream mainframe software product development.

Preferred Qualifications :

- Cloud & AI Adaptability : Foundational exposure or strong engineering interest in cloud native technologies (GCP, GCP Cloud Run) and Artificial Intelligence tools (LLMs, Expert Systems).

- Integration Middleware : Working knowledge of MQ Series, zOS Connect, or legacy application generators like TELON.

- Functional background supporting purchasing, manufacturing, or automotive industry software systems.
