This engineer works at the boundary between hardware and software - firmware, drivers, power management, and device bring-up - and partners closely with electrical engineering to make sure new hardware works reliably with the operating system and applications above it.\nESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS\nDevelops and maintains embedded firmware, including power management, device configuration, and update mechanisms.\nBrings up new hardware and verifies that hardware and software work together correctly.\nDevelops or adapts drivers and low-level software that connect custom hardware to Windows, Android, Linux, or Embedded OS.\nIntegrates and configures third-party modules and firmware such as wireless, touch, and positioning components.\nDiagnoses and resolves problems that span hardware and software in development, manufacturing, and the field.\nWorks with electrical engineering, partners, and suppliers on requirements, design reviews, and deliverables.\nDocuments designs. \nMentors others in areas of expertise.\nSKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, and REQUIREMENTS\nBachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field and 4-8 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.\nRequired:\nExperience developing and debugging low-level software including device drivers, firmware, boot loaders, UEFI/BIOS, and peripheral interfaces.\nExperience specifying low-level components, functionality, acceptance tests. \nAbility to read schematics and datasheets and to work hands-on with hardware.\nProficiency with standard electronics lab and debugging equipment.\nStrong, methodical troubleshooting skills across hardware and software.\nDisciplined use of version control and change management.\nAbility to quickly learn and adopt new technologies, methods, and tools to solve problems.\nPreferred:\nExperience with power management, battery systems, or low-power design.\nExperience with BIOS/UEFI, embedded controllers, or device drivers.\nExperience integrating wireless, cellular, GNSS, and sensor modules.\nExperience with rugged or battery-powered computing products.\nExpert use of AI-assisted engineering tools, with independent verification of results.\nRESPONSIBILITY, ACCOUNTABILITY, and SUPERVISORY REPONSIBILITIES\nMay act as a technical lead on development projects. Responsible for aspects of software design of new products, with sustaining and support functions of existing products as needed. Responsible for evaluating and mitigating technical design risks. May supervise other engineers or interns.\nWORKING CONDITIONS\nPhysical Demands:\nOffice and lab environment. Requires extended computer work and hands-on use of electronic test equipment and prototype hardware.\nWorking Hours and Conditions:\nNormally 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday on a 9/80 schedule; may occasionally require additional hours.
