We provide an award-winning cloud platform that helps tens of thousands of accounting professionals work more efficiently and collaboratively every day. With customers in 40 countries, we have grown into a globally distributed team across the US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the Philippines. We are well-funded, ranked #1 on G2, growing rapidly, and have a people-first culture that is recognized with Great Place To Work® certification and on Fortune magazine's Best Small Workplaces™ List.\nEngineering Manager, Engagements to Payments\nAbout the team\nEngagements to Payments (E2P) looks after how accounting firms get paid. That covers the whole journey: proposals and engagement letters, time and budgets, invoicing, online payments, collections, and syncing with accounting systems like Xero and QuickBooks Online. This part of Karbon touches our customers’ revenue, so quality and data integrity really matter.\nOur vision: “Manage long term, profitable client relationships while automating work creation, invoicing and payments.”\nWhat’s ahead\nKeep building out the E2P feature set, so firms can manage everything from engagements to payments in Karbon.\nHelp larger firms (20 to 1,000+ seats) run their billing on Karbon, with support for multiple entities, business units and granular permissions.\nMove our core billing screens from Ember to React, and break parts of our monolith into independently deployable services.\nGet the team to Continuous Delivery (we’re not quite there yet).\nAbout the role\nYou’ll lead a team of 8 frontend and backend engineers and report to our VP of Engineering. This isn’t a hands-on coding role, but you’ll need a strong technical background to guide design decisions, weigh up trade-offs and earn the team’s trust.\nWhat you’ll do\nHire, onboard and grow the team, with clear expectations and regular feedback.\nRaise the bar on technical quality: clear boundaries, sound designs and high operational standards.\nImprove delivery speed and quality by reducing lead time and change failure rate, with customers front and centre.\nOwn reliability with the team: SLOs, observability, system health and blameless incident reviews.\nWork with Product and Tech Leads to plan and deliver, balancing new features, improvements, bugs and maintenance.\nGive the team autonomy with clear goals and accountability, and build strong relationships with other teams.\nOur tech\n Frontend: React and TypeScript (migrating from Ember)\n Backend: .NET (C#, .NET Core, Web API) with SQL Server\nDistributed systems: Messaging, event-driven architecture and consistency\nWhat you’ll bring\nA background as a Senior or above IC before moving into management.\n2+ years as an Engineering Manager.\nA track record of improving quality and speed through technical and process change.\nA strong understanding of distributed systems and data integrity.\nClear communication across locations and time zones.\nNice to have\nBilling or payments experience.\nExperience moving a team toward Continuous Delivery.\nExperience leading large technical migrations.\nWhy Work at Karbon?\nGain global experience across the USA, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Canada and the Philippines\n4 weeks annual leave plus 5 extra \"Karbon Days\" off a year\nFlexible working environment\nWork with (and learn from) an experienced, high-performing team\nBe part of a fast-growing company that firmly believes in promoting high performers from within\nA collaborative, team-oriented culture that embraces diversity, invests in development, and provides consistent feedback\nGenerous parental leave\nOur Engineering Standards\nBalance Speed and Quality\nEngineers are expected to balance delivery speed with a strong commitment to quality, meeting agreed timelines while producing reliable, maintainable, and well-tested solutions. Sound judgment in making trade-offs between velocity and long-term sustainability is essential.\nCollaborate Effectively\nEngineering is collaborative by default. Team members are expected to contribute constructively in design discussions, reviews, and planning, communicate clearly about progress and risks, and support shared team outcomes in both hybrid and distributed environments.\nBuild and Maintain Systems\nEngineers are responsible for building new capabilities while maintaining and improving existing systems. This includes designing scalable solutions, reducing technical debt, supporting operational stability, and contributing to continuous improvement.\nOperate with Autonomy\nA high degree of autonomy is expected. Given clear objectives, engineers should independently translate problems into actionable technical approaches, proactively identify improvements, and continuously expand relevant technical expertise.\nOwnership and Accountability\nOwnership is fundamental. Engineers are accountable for the quality, performance, and customer impact of their work from design through post-release support, and are expected to follow through on commitments.\nAI-Enabled Engineering\nAI is reshaping how software is built, and we are committed to leveraging it as a force multiplier for creativity, impact, and capability. Engineers are expected to confidently apply strong technical fundamentals while embracing AI tools and approaches to enhance productivity, problem-solving, and innovation. Curiosity, adaptability, and enthusiasm for integrating AI into meaningful product development are essential.\nContribute to Team Culture\nEngineers contribute positively to a culture of professionalism, transparency, low bureaucracy, and mutual respect, strengthening team performance through authenticity, curiosity, and collaboration.\nPlease be aware that Karbon will only contact you via email from our domain, karbonhq.com.
