BACKGROUND\nFor our client, an EU Institution based in Brussels, we are looking for a Backend Software Engineer (Python) to join a long-term mission within an international team delivering modern digital services and business-critical applications.\nYou will contribute to the development, maintenance, and enhancement of backend services and APIs, ensuring secure, scalable, and high-performing applications that support key business processes.\nPlease note: candidates must be located within (2) two hours of Brussels, as regular onsite presence is required throughout the assignment.\nYOUR MISSION\nAs a Backend Software Engineer, your responsibilities will be as follows:\nArchitect server-side components and services that form the backbone of web applications, employing best practices in Python programming.\n\nDevelop and maintain RESTful APIs to facilitate seamless communication between front-end and back-end systems.\n\nDesign, implement, and optimise database schemas and queries to ensure efficient data storage and retrieval processes.\n\nManage database security measures to protect sensitive information, ensuring compliance with data protection standards.\n\nEnhance application performance by identifying bottlenecks and optimising server-side code and database queries.\n\nImplement scalable architectures to handle increased user load and data volume, leveraging cloud services and containerisation.\n\nConduct regular code reviews and use vulnerability scanning tools to identify and address potential security issues.\n\nImplement security protocols and standards to safeguard applications against threats and ensure data privacy.\n\nCollaborate closely with front-end developers, UI/UX designers, product managers, and other stakeholders to deliver quality web application solutions.\n\nHelp translate business requirements into technical specifications and adjust implementations based on feedback.\n\nSet up and maintain CI/CD pipelines to automate testing and deployments, ensuring consistent and rapid delivery of applications.\n\nParticipate in deploying applications in cloud environments, using infrastructure-as-code and configuration management tools.\n\nActively engage in debugging and resolving issues raised during testing or reported in production.\n\nWrite technical documentation.\n#LI- MS1\n\nRequirements\nYOUR PROFILE\nBachelor's degree with at least 7 years of relevant professional experience, OR\n\nMaster's degree with at least 5 years of relevant professional experience with focus on Computer Science\n\nAbility to understand, speak, and write English (minimum B2 level)\n\nTechnical knowledge REQUIRED\nProficiency in Python and experience with web frameworks such as Django, Flask, or FastAPI.\n\nExperience with code linters and formatters (e.g., pylint, black, flake8) to enforce coding standards.\n\nExperience with AI-powered code assistants (e.g., Amazon Kiro, Github Copilot), staying updated with advancements in AI-driven code technologies that can streamline Python web application development.\n\nStrong understanding of RESTful design and implementation.\n\nSolid experience with relational (e.g., Oracle, PostgreSQL) and non-relational databases (e.g., Elasticsearch, MongoDB).\n\nExcellent knowledge of ORM, schema design, efficient queries.\n\nExpertise in containerisation tools like Docker, Podman and orchestration using Kubernetes.\n\nKnowledge of vulnerability scanning tools (e.g., OWASP), secure coding practices and standards, including authentication, authorisation and encryption.\n\nKnowledge of code versioning tools such as Git or SVN.\n\nKnowledge of DevSecOps tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions (Continuous Integration/Deployment).\n\nFamiliarity with configuration management tools like Ansible.\n\nExperience with VM management, Linux.\n\nGood knowledge of European Commission grant management ecosystem (eGrants) would be an asset.\n\nSoft skills\nAbility to apply rigor and consistency in BI development practices.\n\nAbility to work in multi-cultural environment.\n\nAbility to participate in multilingual meetings.\n\nAbility to understand, speak and write English, optionally French as an additional asset.\n\nTalent for building relationships and adapting communication to the
