Come find out what you're capable of.\nAbout the role\nBeing an engineer at Klarna means building and owning the systems that move money for millions of people, and that responsibility doesn't end when those systems ship. Your team and your focus can also change as the business changes, and the domain you join may look different in a year. Either way, this stays a hands-on role: you're still writing code, still making architecture calls, still in the codebase, and your influence comes from the quality of that work and the engineers you work most closely with.\nWe are searching for someone who brings expertise that changes what we are capable of. You've built something we haven't. You've gone deep somewhere we haven't been yet. The engineers here are strong; what they don't have is your specific experience, and that's exactly the gap we're hiring into.\nWhat you'll do\nMake sound, defensible technical decisions, and be able to say clearly what you decided against and why.\n\nThink past your own contribution: how it fits the wider architecture, where failures propagate, what breaks first under load, and who feels it downstream.\n\nTie technical choices to business outcomes and size the solution to the problem's actual value - including when the right answer is something small.\n\nDesign for the constraints that come with being a regulated bank - reliability, auditability, controls - and treat them as part of the engineering problem rather than an obstacle to it.\n\nMentor engineers and raise the technical bar across teams. You act as a multiplier and elevate the people and teams around you, not just your own output.\n\nSet the standard for how your domain uses AI in everyday practice - not as a demo, as a working method.\n\nWho you are\nYou bring a capability Klarna doesn't have today. Your experience doesn't just improve what's already there - it unlocks something new entirely.\n\nYou have built and operated systems with real reliability and performance demands at scale, ideally in Java, JavaScript, or Python environments.\n\nYou make trade-offs and can articulate the roads not taken.\n\nYou optimize for business outcomes over engineering elegance, and you know the difference between right-sizing and gold-plating.\n\nYou explain complex systems clearly to technical and non-technical audiences alike.\n\nYou lead through your work, not your title.\n\nYou're comfortable with ambiguity and can move an initiative forward across several teams without formal authority over any of them.\n\nYou have scar tissue and you talk about it - the incident, the design that didn't survive contact with production, what you changed afterwards.\n\nThings you should know before applying\nWorking together: We value co-located teams; most teams currently meet in the office 2-3 days per week, and this varies by team and can change over time.\n\nNon-obvious backgrounds are welcome.
