Working under the direction of the mill Safety Manager, the Process Safety Specialist will focus on the mill's Emergency Preparedness and Readiness and provide leadership and strategic direction for the facility by applying the business framework and Principles. This position creates long-term value for the organization by ensuring risk is aggressively identified and mitigated. This position focuses on managing and optimizing the emergency readiness program, managing process safety elements, and supporting the site safety team.\nOur Team\nThe Big Island Mill is a paper manufacturing facility located in Big Island, Virginia. The mill produces containerboard used to make corrugated packaging, utilizing a combination of recycled and virgin fiber to support a wide range of packaging applications across multiple industries.\nWhat You Will Do\nSupport the Mill in achieving its Vision of Zero Significant Events\nSupport the process safety and chemical process safety programs from an Emergency Response perspective\nCoordinate engineering review capabilities for process hazard analyses (PHA), management of change (MOC), pre-startup safety reviews (PSSR), Design Operation and Maintenance (DOM), and maintaining process safety guidelines and risk assessment tools, including Chemical Reactivity Hazard Management electronic tool.\nAnalyze process safety incidents and near misses to ensure sustainable corrective actions are implemented, providing detailed technical direction to enhance process safety performance.\nChampion emergency readiness team training for multidisciplinary team (e.g. HAZMAT, Fire Brigade, Emergency Medical, Confined Space Rescue, and Incident Command)\nManage the continuous improvement, implementation, and sustainability of emergency readiness programs\nCoordinate the inspection, testing, and maintenance of emergency readiness equipment\nEngage with the Mill Safety Committee and serve as a mentor for technical and hourly employees to make process safety an everyday mission for continuous improvement in daily operations\nAssist project teams in planning safety and emergency readiness into upcoming projects and activities\nMaintain and ensure compliance with GP Compliance Standards, OSHA, NFPA, and other safety regulations with both GP employees, contractors, and sub-contractors\nParticipating in and lead Incident Investigations, applying Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) concepts, and ultimately focusing on higher order controls\nPrepare and deliver safety training and field support as needed\nContribute to the overall Safety of the mill by serving as a compliance standard owner (CSO) for assigned areas\nEngage as a safety representative for assigned areas and complete other duties as assigned\nPosition will participate in on-call rotation as needed (in general, once every 10-week period, and may include one holiday per year)\nWho You Are (Basic Qualifications)\nExperience in an Emergency Response role \nExperience managing emergency response teams (HAZMAT, Emergency Medical, Confined Space Rescue, and Incident Command)\nKnowledge of NFPA requirements for emergency response systems\nWhat Will Put You Ahead\nEmergency Medical Technician or Paramedic Certification\nExperience and knowledge of PSM covered processes including PHAs, MOCs, and PSSRs\nExperience in heavy manufacturing and/or chemical processes in a pulp and paper and/or oil and gas facility\nExperience in managing injuries and illnesses\nExperience developing regulatory compliance programs and training\nExperience in OSHA Compliance programs\nInstructor NFPA 1041 Level I, II, III\nRope Rescue NFPA 1006 Level I, II\nFor this role, we anticipate paying $85-105 per year.
