Purchasing Officer

Our client, a leading local winemaker, is seeking an experienced, sharp, proactive Purchasing Officer to join our team! In this role, you will oversee purchasing, monitor stock levels, manage supplier relationships, and coordinate international freight and customs clearance to keep their shelves stocked with products.

Key Responsibilities

Purchasing & Supplier Management

• Market Research & Sourcing: Explore local and international markets to identify new suppliers, evaluate product ranges, and negotiate competitive pricing.
• Order Processing: Handle purchase requisitions, establish economic re-order levels, and place accurate purchase orders detailing price, specification, volume, and delivery terms.
• Supplier Records: Maintain up-to-date supplier databases, price catalogues, and competitive bidding documentation.

Stock Control & Optimisation

• Inventory Monitoring: Track stock levels using computerised procurement software to identify overstocking, manage re-order thresholds, and prevent stock obsolescence.
• Process Improvement: Analyse purchasing reports and recommend operational enhancements to senior management.
• Departmental Support: Collaborate closely with the Finance Department to ensure accurate invoicing, budget alignment, and smooth group operations.

Logistics, Freight & Customs

• Shipping Evaluation: Organise order deliveries by assessing freight quotes for cost, speed, and reliability.
• Logistics Coordination: Oversee end-to-end haulage, freight forwarding, and unloading into company stores.
• Customs Compliance: Manage customs clearance processes and stay up to date on import procedures and tariffs affecting product costs.

Key Requirements

• Experience: Proven background in purchasing, procurement, or supply chain coordination (experience within retail, food & beverage, or the wine and spirits industry is a distinct advantage).
• Technical Skills: Proficient with computerised stock procurement/ERP systems and Microsoft Office.
• Industry Knowledge: Familiarity with shipping options, haulage logistics, and customs clearance procedures.
• Key Attributes: Analytical approach, strong negotiation skills, meticulous attention to detail, and excellent organisational abilities.
• Must hold an excellent level of Maltese & English.
