Founded in 1978, LaBella Associates is a full service Architecture, Engineering, Planning, Environmental and Energy Consulting firm headquartered in Rochester, NY.

We are currently hiring a Senior Plumbing / Process Engineer in our Building Engineering Division for our Elmira New York office.

The Building Engineering Division at LaBella provides comprehensive building and infrastructure engineering services, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, structural, and process engineering. Our services range from feasibility studies and system assessments through project design, bidding, and construction administration. Our engineers support new construction, renovations, additions, system upgrades, and design-build projects for institutional, commercial, manufacturing, laboratory, healthcare, and industrial clients.

The Senior Plumbing / Process Engineer will lead the planning and design of plumbing and process piping systems for a variety of building and industrial projects. Responsibilities will include field investigation, system analysis, engineering calculations, equipment selection, preparation of construction documents and specifications, multidisciplinary coordination, and construction administration.

Typical plumbing systems may include domestic water, sanitary and storm drainage, natural gas, specialty waste, medical gas, and laboratory plumbing systems. Process engineering assignments may include industrial water, high-purity water, compressed air and gases, steam and condensate, chemical piping, process waste, heat-transfer systems, equipment utility connections, and other specialty piping systems serving manufacturing and industrial processes.

The successful candidate will work directly with clients, contractors, equipment vendors, and internal design teams to develop safe, reliable, maintainable, and cost-effective solutions. The candidate should be capable of leading projects, mentoring junior engineers and designers, maintaining technical quality, and supporting client and business development activities. This position offers the opportunity to grow from a senior technical role into a plumbing and process engineering leadership position within the office and the Building Engineering Division.

Duties

  • Lead the planning, analysis, and design of plumbing and process piping systems for new construction, renovations, expansions, and facility infrastructure upgrades.
  • Perform field investigations and document existing plumbing, piping, utility, and process systems in active institutional, commercial, manufacturing, laboratory, and industrial facilities.
  • Meet with clients and facility personnel to establish project requirements, operating criteria, system capacities, utility demands, and design objectives.
  • Develop plumbing and process engineering concepts, feasibility studies, basis-of-design narratives, engineering reports, and opinions of probable construction cost.
  • Prepare and oversee the preparation of calculations, drawings, specifications, equipment schedules, details, and other construction documents.
  • Develop process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, utility flow diagrams, piping plans, riser diagrams, and system schematics, as applicable to the project.
  • Design domestic water, sanitary waste and vent, storm drainage, natural gas, specialty waste, medical gas, laboratory plumbing, and other building plumbing systems.
  • Design process and industrial utility systems that may include compressed air, vacuum, industrial gases, steam and condensate, industrial water, high-purity water, chemical piping, process waste, heat-transfer fluids, and equipment utility connections.
  • Size and select pumps, heat exchangers, tanks, pressure-reducing equipment, water-heating equipment, filtration and treatment components, piping specialties, and related process or plumbing equipment.
  • Perform pipe sizing, pressure-drop, pump head, utility demand, equipment capacity, drainage, and other engineering calculations.
  • Evaluate piping materials and joining methods for compatibility with system pressure, temperature, fluid properties, water quality, corrosion potential, cleanliness requirements, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Develop equipment and piping layouts with consideration for operability, maintenance access, constructability, safety, system drainage, expansion, equipment removal, and future facility needs.
  • Coordinate process equipment utility requirements and interface points with equipment manufacturers, vendors, contractors, owners, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Develop control narratives, operating sequences, instrumentation requirements, and monitoring points for plumbing and process systems in coordination with controls and electrical engineers.
  • Apply applicable building, plumbing, mechanical, fuel gas, fire, energy, and industrial piping codes and standards, including relevant provisions of ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, NFPA standards, and state and local codes.
  • Coordinate hazardous-material, chemical storage, ventilation, spill-containment, emergency-shower, eyewash, and process-safety requirements with the appropriate engineering disciplines and code consultants.
  • Participate in process hazard reviews, constructability reviews, and design risk assessments when required by the project.
  • Provide technical leadership for multidiscipline projects and coordinate plumbing and process work with architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and controls disciplines.
  • Conduct quality-control reviews of plumbing and process engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, reports, and construction documents.
  • Provide bidding and construction administration services, including responses to contractor questions, shop drawing and submittal reviews, site observations, preparation of field reports, and review of change proposals.
  • Assist clients in evaluating design alternatives through technical analysis, lifecycle considerations, constructability reviews, and cost-benefit comparisons.
  • Develop and direct project teams to meet project scope, schedule, budget, and quality objectives.
  • Manage project financial performance, staffing requirements, and engineering schedules.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers, designers, and other project team members.
  • Assist with the development of plumbing and process piping design standards, specifications, details, calculation tools, and quality-control procedures.
  • Maintain and develop client relationships.
  • Support client and business development efforts, including identifying opportunities, attending client meetings, and participating in industry events.
  • Prepare scopes of work, staffing plans, fee estimates, schedules, and technical proposals for new projects.
