Reporting into the Systems Team, this role plays a critical part in translating user needs, regulatory requirements, and technical constraints into intuitive, safe, and effective user experiences. The Principal UX Designer works cross-functionally with Marketing, Systems Engineering, and Software Engineering teams and serves as the primary point of contact for external UX design partners, ensuring alignment and quality across all design deliverables.\nAbout the Role:\nDefine and drive the UX vision, strategy, design standards, and scalable systems for medical device products, ensuring alignment with user needs, clinical requirements, business objectives, regulatory expectations, and engineering constraints. \nLead end-to-end UX design activities, including user research, workflows, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity interfaces, ensuring usability, accessibility, safety, and compliance throughout the product lifecycle. \nPartner with Marketing, Systems Engineering, and Software Engineering teams to align user needs, product goals, design feasibility, and implementation, while facilitating design reviews and continuous feedback throughout development. \nServe as the primary liaison for external UX/UI design partners, overseeing vendor selection, onboarding, deliverables, and performance while ensuring all outputs meet internal standards, regulatory requirements, and product objectives. \nPlan and conduct user research, usability testing, and human factors activities in partnership with Human Factors Engineering resources, translating findings into actionable design improvements and supporting validation efforts in accordance with applicable FDA and IEC standards. \nEnsure UX designs support medical device regulatory compliance and contribute to design history files, usability engineering documentation, risk management activities, and regulatory submissions in collaboration with Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs teams. \nMinimum Qualifications:\nBachelor’s or Master’s degree in human Factors, UX Design, Industrial Design, HCI, or related field \n8+ years of UX design experience, with significant experience in regulated industries (medical device strongly preferred) \nProven experience designing for complex systems and/or safety-critical applications \nStrong portfolio showcasing end-to-end UX process and impactful design outcomes \nExperience working in cross-functional environments with engineering and product teams \nDeep expertise in UX methodologies (user research, interaction design, prototyping, usability testing) \nStrong visual and interaction design skills \nExcellent communication and stakeholder management abilities \nAbility to balance user needs, technical constraints, and regulatory requirements \nProficiency with modern design tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite) \nStrategic thinker with hands-on execution capability \nStrong leadership and influencing skills without formal authority \nDetail-oriented with a strong focus on quality and compliance \nPassion for improving patient and clinician experiences through design \nPreferred Qualifications:\nExperience with Class II medical devices \nFamiliarity with IEC 62366, FDA Human Factors Guidance, and ISO 13485/14971 \nExperience designing for embedded systems, connected devices, or clinical workflows \nExperience managing or collaborating with external design agencies \nWhy Laborie:\nOur Mission every day is to operate as a world-class specialist medical company making and advancing technologies that preserve and restore human dignity.
