Our technology helps industrial sectors by unlocking value from emissions that would otherwise go to waste.\nTogether with our partners, we’re building a circular carbon economy—where carbon is continuously reused, not released.\nIf you’re ready to make a meaningful impact on the future of industrial sustainability, we’d love to hear from you.\nAbout the role\nThis role is based at the company’s Skokie Headquarters / R&D Center. The Instrumentation & Electrical Technician is responsible for hands-on maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, repair, and installation of process instrumentation and low-voltage electrical equipment supporting laboratory, pilot plant, facilities, and process development operations.\nReporting to the Facilities team, this position helps keep instruments, electrical components, alarms, shutdown devices, and supporting equipment safe, accurate, available, and reliable through preventive and corrective maintenance.\nThe successful candidate will be a practical, hands-on technician who works well with engineers, researchers, operations personnel, other maintenance resources, and EHS professionals in a changing R&D and light-industrial environment.\nKey duties of the role\nPerform preventive and corrective maintenance on pressure, temperature, flow, level, analytical, and other process instruments used in laboratories, pilot plants, and facilities.\nCalibrate, inspect, function-test, troubleshoot, repair, and replace transmitters, sensors, switches, control valves, actuators, solenoids, and associated field devices.\nTroubleshoot instrument loops, signal wiring, junction boxes, power supplies, relays, contactors, heater controls, motor controls, VFDs, and other low-voltage electrical equipment.\nMaintain and test gas detection, alarm, interlock, and emergency shutdown hardware in accordance with established procedures.\nBuild, wire, label, inspect, and modify control panels and field wiring using approved drawings, specifications, and safe work practices.\nInstall and maintain pneumatic tubing, regulators, valves, fittings, and small-bore gas-handling components, including Swagelok® or similar systems.\nRespond to equipment problems, identify failed components, make safe repairs, and return equipment to service with minimal disruption.\nUse work orders and maintenance schedules to plan and document preventive maintenance, calibration, repairs, parts used, and follow-up work.\nMaintain spare parts, tools, calibration standards, drawings, manuals, and equipment records in an orderly and usable condition.\nSupport equipment installation, checkout, and minor modifications under the direction of engineering or operations; provide practical feedback on maintainability and reliability.\nCoordinate with vendors and contractors for specialized service and verify that completed work meets site safety and technical requirements.\nFollow electrical safety, lockout/tagout, PPE, and other site procedures, and participate in MOC, PHA, and incident investigations as requested.\nMinimum qualifications\nHigh school diploma or equivalent plus relevant trade, military, apprenticeship, or industrial maintenance training. An associate degree or technical certificate in instrumentation, electrical technology, electronics, mechatronics, or industrial maintenance is preferred but not required.\n3+ years of hands-on instrumentation, electrical, electronics, or industrial maintenance experience in a manufacturing, industrial, laboratory, pilot plant, utilities, or similar operating environment.\nPractical experience troubleshooting and repairing field instruments, low-voltage electrical circuits, panels, and related equipment using drawings and test equipment.\nAbility to work safely, document completed work, communicate equipment status, and collaborate with operations, engineering, and other technical personnel.\nIf this role interests you but you do not meet every qualification listed, we still encourage you to apply. Relevant skills and experience can be gained in many ways, and we will consider candidates whose background demonstrates the ability and willingness to succeed in the role. \nCompetencies & skills you will need\nHands-on troubleshooting of pressure, temperature, flow, level, analytical, and safety instrumentation.\nCalibration and loop-checking using multimeters, process calibrators, pressure sources, and other common diagnostic equipment.\nAbility to read and work from electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, loop drawings, P&IDs, equipment manuals, and vendor instructions.\nExperience wiring and troubleshooting low-voltage AC/DC circuits, control panels, power supplies, relays, contactors, motor starters, heater controls, and VFDs.\nExperience with control valves, actuators, solenoid valves, regulators, pneumatic controls, tubing, and compressed-gas systems.\nAbility to distinguish field-device, wiring, power, mechanical, and basic control-system faults and communicate findings clearly.\nWorking familiarity with PLC-controlled equipment \nSound mechanical aptitude and the ability to use hand tools, power tools, and electrical test equipment safely.\nOrganized work habits, accurate maintenance documentation, and the ability to prioritize planned work and equipment breakdowns.\nCommitment to safety, reliability, quality, and practical continuous improvement.\nPreferred qualifications\nExperience maintaining instrumentation or electrical equipment in chemical processing, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, food, energy, industrial R&D, or manufacturing environments.\nHands-on experience with Swagelok® or similar tubing and fittings.\nExperience with gas detection systems, safety interlocks, or emergency shutdown devices.\nFamiliarity with Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar PLC-based equipment from a maintenance and troubleshooting perspective.\nKnowledge of intrinsically safe circuits, hazardous-area equipment, or applicable electrical codes.\nExperience using a CMMS or maintaining calibration schedules, work orders, and spare-parts records.\nISA CCST, NCCER, electrical, instrumentation, or comparable trade certification.\nOSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour training.\nPhysical requirements\nAbility to work in laboratory and pilot plant environments.\nAbility to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.\nAbility to work around process equipment, piping systems, and electrical panels.\nAbility to climb ladders and work in elevated spaces as required.\nAbility to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with all safety requirements.\nWhy join LanzaTech?\nJoin a mission-driven organization at the forefront of carbon recycling and industrial decarbonization.
