About This Job

The Downstream Processing Scientist is responsible for developing, optimizing, and scaling purification processes for proteins and biologics produced using LenioBio's ALiCE® technology platform. The role bridges early-stage research and manufacturing by advancing molecules from discovery through process development, scale-up, and technology transfer, while ensuring product quality, scalability, and project success. Working closely with R&D, Analytics, Technical Operations, and external CDMO partners, the scientist drives scientific innovation and contributes to the successful delivery of customer and internal development programs.

What Your Responsibilities Are

  • Design, develop, optimize, and transfer downstream purification processes for research and development programs.
  • Independently plan, execute, analyze, and interpret downstream process development studies.
  • Evaluate and implement innovative purification technologies, chromatography approaches, and membrane-based processes.
  • Support process scale-up and technology transfer activities with manufacturing partners and CDMOs.
  • Apply scientific expertise to customer discussions, project proposals, grant activities, and business development initiatives.
  • Communicate project progress, experimental findings, risks, and recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Author technical reports, SOPs, study summaries, protocols, and quality documentation.
  • Mentor students, technical assistants, and junior scientists.
  • Drive scientific troubleshooting and continuous improvement initiatives.

What We're Looking For

Qualifications & Scientific Expertise
  • MSc or PhD in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Bioprocess Engineering, or a related life science discipline.
  • Strong expertise in downstream process development, protein purification, chromatography, and scale-up of biologics.
  • Hands-on experience with ÄKTA systems, affinity purification technologies, and protein characterization methods (e.g., HPLC, SEC, ELISA, BLI/SPR).
  • 3+ years of industry experience in biotechnology, biopharma, or CDMO environments.
  • Strong scientific problem-solving, data analysis, and technical writing skills.
  • Understanding of upstream process development is an advantage.
Working methods & Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Proven ability to independently design, execute, and interpret complex process development studies.
  • Experience supporting process scale-up and technology transfer activities.
  • Strong project management and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to communicate scientific results effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaborative mindset with experience working across multidisciplinary teams and mentoring junior colleagues.
Mindset & Ways of Working
  • Passion for solving complex scientific and technical challenges.
  • Independent, analytical, and data-driven thinker.
  • Adaptable, resilient, and proactive, with a hands-on approach.
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working in a dynamic biotech environment.
  • Committed to scientific excellence, quality, and continuous improvement.
Additional Requirements
  • Professional fluency in English, both written and spoken.
  • Willingness to work primarily on-site in Aachen and collaborate closely with laboratory-based teams.

You'll be successful in this role if you...

  • Enjoy turning challenging purification problems into scalable solutions.
  • Thrive in a hands-on laboratory environment while maintaining a strategic perspective.
  • Take ownership and proactively drive projects forward.
  • Excel in collaborative, fast-paced, cross-functional teams.
  • Want to contribute to innovative biologics enabled by LenioBio's ALiCE® platform.

What We Offer

  • A full-time position in Aachen, Germany, offered on a two-year project-based contract.
  • The opportunity to shape the future of biomanufacturing. Join a pioneering biotech company that is transforming protein production and helping accelerate access to innovative medicines worldwide.
  • A role in which you can take ownership of challenging scientific projects with significant growth opportunities.
  • A dynamic and entrepreneurial environment where innovation is encouraged, initiative is valued, and bureaucracy is kept to a minimum.
  • The chance to work alongside a diverse, international, and highly talented team united by a shared passion for scientific excellence and innovation.
  • Professional and personal growth opportunities in a fast-paced organization.
  • A competitive compensation package that recognizes your expertise, contribution, and impact.
  • A culture built on collaboration, trust, and continuous learning, where open communication and constructive feedback are encouraged at every level.
