This role combines technical leadership with responsibility for leading and developing engineers and delivering DevOps work packages.\nWhat you will do as a Principal DevOps Engineer\nAct as the technical authority for automation and DevOps solutions across projects and programmes.\nLead the design and implementation of CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and container orchestration.\nProvide domain expertise in secure DevOps/DevSecOps, embedding cyber security into pipelines and environments.\nCapture and analyse requirements, shaping high- and low-level technical designs.\nLead the planning, resourcing and technical delivery of assigned work packages, including estimation, reporting and management of risks.\nProvide line management, mentoring and coaching for DevOps Engineers and Technicians, supporting their performance, development and wellbeing.\nSupport recruitment, onboarding, capability development and knowledge sharing across the DevOps community.\nSupport technology assessments, feasibility studies, and roadmap development.\nEngage with stakeholders and customers, presenting and defending technical solutions and reporting on delivery progress, risks and mitigations.\nWhat you’ll bring\nExtensive technical expertise in automation, orchestration, and secure DevOps practices.\nAbility to balance hands-on engineering and technical authority with people leadership, delivery management and mentorship.\nDemonstrable experience of leading and developing engineers and coordinating technical delivery.\nA problem-solving mindset with the confidence to recommend and justify technical approaches.\nCore areas (must have):\nExperience in the design, build and maintenance of CI/CD pipelines (Github Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, Azure DevOps) and version control (Git)\nInfrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible, Helm)\nContainerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift/Tanzu)\nScripting and automation (Python, Bash, PowerShell)\nStrong understanding of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) and hybrid deployments\nKnowledge of DevSecOps and cyber security practices in software delivery\nExperience leading engineers and planning technical work to cost, quality and schedule\nDesira ble:\nExpertise in secrets management and PKI (e.g. HashiCorp Vault)\nExperience with monitoring/logging tools (ELK stack, Prometheus, Splunk)\nFamiliarity with service mesh and modern networking (Istio, Envoy)\nExposure to data engineering and integration (Apache ecosystem, SQL, Python)\nRecognised technical certifications (AWS/Azure Architect, Kubernetes CKA/CKAD, Terraform)\nExperience in influencing technical standards, best practices, or contributing to professional forums\nThis is not an exhaustive list, and we are keen to hear from you even if you might not have experience in all the above.
