Our aim is to see you through your undergrad years and successful placements may result in an offer to return for further placements or for an offer on our Graduate Development programme.\nThis programme is remunerated £26,228 per annum.\nThe programme will run from 1st June- 27th August 2027\nWhat you’ll do as a Summer Placement Systems Engineer\nSystems Engineers are involved in all aspects of design and development; from initial product design through to in-service support.\nThey look at the big picture, determine how the system needs to operate and collaborate to produce the required overall operational behaviours. They also dive into the deepest level of detail - taking the system piece-by-piece and defining its design to the finest point. Our Systems Engineers can also actively engage in R&D, developing new concepts and conducting fundamental research into our future technologies.\nAs a Summer Placement Systems Engineer, you will work on real engineering problems within either the Radar or the Advanced Targeting business area.\nYou will have the opportunity to be involved in supporting a wide range of tasks across multiple projects/products, such as:\nThe radar for the Typhoon fighter jet\nThe radar for the SAAB Gripen fighter\nOur family of Surveillance AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radars\nAn IRCM (Infra-Red Counter Measures) system\nOur laser target designator or laser ranging systems\nCore activities within Systems Engineering include:\nRequirements capture, design documentation, verification and validation.\nAlgorithm design and test.\nPerformance modelling; building physics-based models to test our designs through computer simulation.\nData analysis; end-to-end systems analysis using synthetic and ‘real world’ data.\nApplied research; from product improvements to blue-sky thinking.\nYou will work with an experienced engineer who will provide day-to-day guidance and on-the-job training. You will be introduced to systems engineering processes, methods, technology and tools, with particular emphasis placed on learning practical skills that may not be easily gained or experienced in the academic environment of a university.\nWhat you’ll bring\nBe a self-motivated individual, willing to take on new challenges and drive continuous personal development\nStrong communication skills across a variety of mediums i.e. written, verbal, digital, etc.\nThe ability to develop effective working relationships with peers and stakeholders\nAdaptable to the ever-changing demands that will be encountered within the role\nOffer novel ideas and methods for solving technical problems, drawing on personal experiences and knowledge learned during academic studies\nRole Requirements\nAll of our Summer Placement roles require you to be currently studying a relevant degree discipline such as Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, or other STEM subject degrees. This should be a minimum of a Bachelors level degree.\nAll successful candidates must be returning to university after their Summer Placement, i.e. not in their final year.\nIn addition to this, we would be interested in hearing from you if you have experience in:\nCoding/programming.\nRelevant project work and/or placements in industry.\nApplying your science and technology knowledge to solve a real-world problem\nThis is not an exhaustive list, and we are keen to hear from you even if you might not have experience in all the above. The most important skill is a good attitude and willingness to learn.\nSecurity Clearance\nAt Leonardo, many of our roles are subject to security and export control restrictions set by UK Government Security requirements and customer obligations. As part of this process, a range of factors may be considered, including an individual's background, travel history, nationality, previous nationalities held and other information relevant to the vetting assessment.\nTo be eligible for National Security Vetting at SC level, applicants will generally be expected to have continuously resided in the UK for the previous five years. For DV clearance, this is typically ten years. In some circumstances, time spent overseas may be accepted, with additional overseas checks.
