The role also provides technical support across projects, contributing to proposal development, procurement, commissioning, and handover activities.\nKEY PERFORMANCE AREAS\nEngineering Design & Technical Delivery\nDevelop engineering calculations, drawings, datasheets, and specifications\nEnsure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements\nAddress and close internal and external design review comments\nIdentify and manage technical risks within assigned scope\nTendering, Proposals and Technical Input\nGenerate mechanical designs for nuclear facilities ensuring compliance with nuclear codes\nManage configuration control for design modifications during review and installation phases\nInterface with Project Engineering, Procurement, Cost Control and SHEQ teams on design requirements\nReview material specifications and procurement documents for nuclear applications\nTender & Proposal Preparation\nConduct technical feasibility studies to support bid/no-bid decisions\nDevelop mechanical procurement specifications for equipment, materials, and services pricing\nParticipate in scope clarification meetings with clients and proposal teams\nProject Execution & Technical Support\nProvide technical support to site teams and resolve site queries\nSupport commissioning activities, including procedure compilation and testing\nEnsure as-built documentation and punch list items are resolved\nDesign Integration & Interdisciplinary Coordination\nInterface with other engineering disciplines to ensure coordinated design\nParticipate in integrated design and constructability reviews\nIdentify interface risks and implement mitigation strategies\nEvaluate engineering software requirements and tools\nApply value engineering principles to optimise cost and performance\nGovernance, Compliance & Technical Leadership\nEnsure compliance with the Engineering Management Plan (EMP) and project procedures\nProvide technical guidance and mentorship to EITs and junior engineers/technologists\nMonitor engineering hours against budget and report variances\nParticipate in change control and cost control processes\nPromote SHEQ compliance and report near-miss incidents\nContract Negotiation & Client Engagement\nParticipate in client technical negotiations to clarify scope and requirements\nReview contract terms to ensure all mechanical technical elements are accurately captured\nClarify technical inclusions, exclusions, and assumptions with clients and the commercial team\nAddress client technical queries during contract finalisation\nEnsure contractual technical obligations are achievable within proposed resources\nQuality Assurance & Testing Oversight\nCompile test procedures for mechanical systems and equipment\nParticipate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) to verify equipment compliance with specifications\nConduct or oversee receipt inspection activities for mechanical nuclear equipment\nSupport site commissioning activities and testing as required by project teams\nRaise and track non-conformance reports, ensuring timely resolution and closeout\nQUALIFICATION\nSc./ BEng /BTech in Mechanical Engineering\nRegistration as a Professional Engineer/Technologist with ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa)\nRecognised or authorised Safety Evaluator status (e.g., 10 CFR 50.59 or equivalent) preferred\nEXPERIENCE\nMinimum 5 years' relevant mechanical design experience in the nuclear sector\nProven experience working within nuclear design teams\nDemonstrated experience in nuclear safety screenings, evaluations, and safety case development\nCOMPETENCIES\nKnowledge\nComprehensive understanding of mechanical engineering codes and standards (ASME, SABS, ISO)\nIn-depth knowledge of nuclear-specific standards and regulatory requirements (NNR, IAEA, KTA)\nThorough understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and associated regulations\nFamiliarity with quality management systems (ISO 9001, ASME NQA-1, IAEA GS-R-3)\nUnderstanding of nuclear safety classification and safety case principles\nKnowledge of design configuration management processes\nBehaviours\nHigh professional and ethical standards\nStrong
