The pharmacy unit plays a vital role in ensuring the safe and effective use of medications for patients. The unit is responsible for dispensing medications accurately and efficiently, maintaining comprehensive medication inventory and control, including narcotics and controlled substances. This includes selecting, calculating, measuring, preparing (both sterile and non-sterile), packaging, labeling, charging, and crediting various pharmacy products like intravenous medications. In addition, the pharmacy ensures compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.

How you’ll contribute

A Pharmacy Technician who excels in this role will:

  • Participates in the in-patient and out-patient medication distribution and information management processes.

  • Answer telephones and electronic messages.

  • Enter, maintain, and assure the accuracy of all information in the Pharmacy Department’s patient data bases.

  • Receive and process medication orders and prescriptions via medication order/entry-locate, assemble, package, and label drug doses (new orders, unit-dose cycle fill, and out-patient prescriptions), deliver completed orders.

  • Clarify questionable requests and solve distribution problems.

  • Post charges/credits for transactions that are not completed via order-entry.

  • Assemble stock orders.

  • Extemporaneously package and label doses that require special packaging.

  • Prepare, maintain, and file all reports and forms employed for the complete documentation of all distributive and compounding activities.

  • Assist in the recording of department statistics.

  • Meet performance and educational requirements for the compounding, preparation and distribution of sterile and nonsteriledose forms.

  • Assist in the provision of out-patient pharmacy prescription services.

  • Participate in the inventory management process (alert buyer to out-of-stock or unusual utilization circumstances, receive orders, restock, perform physical inventories, review inventory for outdated medications and proper storage, etc).

  • Learn and competently utilize Pharmacy automated information,distribution and inventorymanagement systems.

  • Maintain, neat, clean, orderly work area (unit-dose assembly, IV admixture, passive inventory, data control, library/conference, out-patient, employee facilities).

  • Perform hospital-based unit inspections for both inpatient and outpatient patient care areas, including the pharmacy department.

What we’re looking for

Applicants should be a High School graduate or equivalent. Additional requirements include:

  • Licensed as a pharmacy technician or pharmacy technician in training by the PA State Board of Pharmacy.
