The Lilly Kinsale manufacturing operation is located in Dunderrow, close to the historic andscenic town of Kinsale, Co Cork. The mission of the Kinsale facility is to support the commercialisation, manufacture and supply of many of the newest medicines in Lilly’s portfolio. Production of medicines commenced in Kinsale in 1981 and today the manufacturing campus in Kinsale employs around 1,200 people and uses chemical and peptide synthesis, and biotechnology manufacturing processes to make active ingredients for medicines across all therapeutic areas referenced above. The site also works in close partnership with the Lilly global research and development function in the areas of process development and optimisation across all three manufacturing platforms.
Purpose of team and role
The QCL Intern will provide support for Eli Lilly Kinsale quality control laboratory operations and project work within the chemistry and bioanalytical laboratories.
This position is part of the Quality Control Laboratory (QCL) and involves supporting GMP operations according to established quality control procedures. Responsibilities also include evaluating novel raw materials and alternative sources for existing materials. The QCL Intern may support and/or conduct testing and assays on samples submitted by Technical Services and Manufacturing Science (TSMS). Additional support is given for stability studies, the site clearance air monitoring program, as well as utility and environmental monitoring programs.
The QCL Intern will assist with analytical testing required for new product introduction, such as method transfer and validation. The laboratory may also provide support for other groups within Eli Lilly, including reference standard characterization, investigative testing, and further stability studies. The role includes assistance in installing and maintaining equipment, managing associated SOPs, and maintaining required quality systems. QCL Intern may also perform additional routine or non-routine assays as requested by different areas of the plant.
Responsibilities:
- The QCL Intern is responsible for supporting and conducting various analytical procedures in accordance with current corporate specifications and cGMP’s and for maintaining these SOP’s.
- The QCL Intern will be responsible for tabulating and consolidating assay results, lead times and other performance indicators and be capable of presenting informal reports of results to immediate supervision.
- Working with a high level of analytical instrumentation, the QCL Intern may be involved in the qualification of these instruments and in their routine maintenance.
- The QCL Intern may also be involved in the development, validation and verification of new methodologies, as part of new product introductions or process improvement activities.
- The QCL Intern may also be requested to partake in or lead area or cross-functional continuous improvement projects e.g. Six Sigma or other appropriate methodology
- The QCL Intern may also be responsible for the maintenance of an inventory of chemicals and supplies used to perform analytical testing.
Requirements:
- The QCL Intern is knowledgeable of general scientific methods and is capable of learning and executing new techniques and instrumentation after appropriate training.
- Based on their background qualification, the candidate will be familiar with analytical instrumentation such as: gas chromatographs, high performance liquid chromatographs, atomic absorption, IR and UV spectrophotometers, polarimeters, particle size analysers, Karl Fischer titrators, capillary electrophoresis, mass spectrometry and NMR spectrometry.
- In the microbiological area, the QCL intern shall be familiar with microscopes, biosafety cabinets, laminar flow hoods, autoclaves, incubators, plate readers, microbial identification equipment, environmental monitoring equipment and polymerase chain reaction equipment.
