About the opportunity

Our Luxembourg-based Product Engineering team is responsible for both new and existing services, owning our retail payment processing products, integrations to payment networks, encryption and key management. You'll play an active role in building high-quality, scalable software, taking ownership of services in production, and continuously improving how we work.

As we continue to explore and adopt AI, you'll also have opportunities to identify new ways of solving problems, and improve how we design, build and deliver software. We're looking for engineers who enjoy using their curiosity to experiment with emerging technologies, and can apply experience-based judgement to turn promising ideas into practical, reliable, secure and maintainable solutions.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

• Designing, building, maintaining and operating features across our omni-channel payments platform, including opportunities to incorporate AI-driven capabilities.
• Collaborating closely with engineers, product managers, and business analysts to turn problems into safe, reliable releases.
• Leveraging AI to create meaningful customer and business value, from early experimentation through to production-ready solutions.
• Owning outcomes end-to-end: understanding the problem, shaping the solution, shipping it safely, and improving it based on what we learn in production.

What you will do in this role

The specific focus of the role will evolve as we scale, but you can expect to:

• Take full ownership of delivering applications that exceed customer expectations.
• Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to clarify requirements, align on scope, and deliver customer value.
• Experiment using AI models, APIs, frameworks and AI-assisted development workflows, sharing learnings and helping the team continuously improve how we build and deliver software.
• Work within clear domain boundaries and communicate design trade-offs.
• Solve complex and interesting problems in an agile team setting
• Care about your team, help them grow through providing constructive feedbacks, coaching, and mentoring
• Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, constructive feedback, and shared learning.

From a technology standpoint, you'll work with:

• AWS cloud technologies (ECS/Lambda/DynamoDB/Aurora/S3/SQS/CloudFormation)
• Microservices delivered through Buildkite CI/CD
• Java services (Quarkus/Spring)
• A blend of classic (e.g., ISO8583/CB2A/APACS) and contemporary (RESTful APIs, SDKs) technologies in the payment domain

You are likely a match if you have:

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, including architecture and design of backend systems.
• Strong systems thinking mindset: the ability to reason holistically about complex distributed architectures, anticipate cross-service impacts, and confidently navigate technical trade-offs.
• Experience in a Product-based team with responsibility for production health
• A good understanding of the opportunities and limitations of AI in software development, with demonstrated good judgements around output quality, security, reliability and responsible use.
• Experience building AI-enabled applications or integrating AI capabilities, such as agentic operations capabilities into software products
• Genuine curiosity and a self-motivated willingness to experiment, learn, and apply new technologies to solve meaningful customer problems.
• Experience with scaling and building resilience in existing and new services
• Have proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment
• A willingness to plan, learn, fail, and try again
• The ability to comprehend, coordinate, and communicate clearly and effectively on a wide range of issues with colleagues, both technical and non-technical
• Professional experience with cloud technologies
• Experience in mentoring junior engineers and contributing to team growth.

In-office expectations

At Littlepay, we believe great work happens when we solve problems, together. We see in-person collaboration as an important way to build connections, share ideas, and support each other meaningfully.

For those assigned to an office location, we generally expect a minimum two-day presence in the office each week. This may vary depending on your role, team, and location. For example, our team in Luxembourg works 4 days from the office, whereas our AU and UK teams currently work a minimum of 2 days onsite in our Melbourne/London offices. Some positions might require more frequent office attendance to support cross-functional collaboration, customer engagement, or specific team workflows. Your hiring manager will provide details relevant to your role.

Our recruitment process

If you’ve been shortlisted for the role, you’ll first have a chat with a member of the Talent team. If the stars align, we'll send you a short workplace preferences questionnaire to help us learn more about the way you prefer to work. We'll then invite you to complete a technical challenge. Following a successful first interview with our Platform Engineering team, you'll be invited to interview with a second set of Littlepay folks (and enjoy a tour of our office) before being presented with an offer.
