Lockheed Martin is the largest defence contractor in the world, formed in 1995 by merging Lockheed Corporation with Martin Marietta and headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland. Its single most important programme is the F-35 Lightning II, the most expensive weapons system ever built, alongside the F-16, the C-130 transport and classified work at the Skunk Works advanced development unit. The company also dominates missile defence with THAAD and PAC-3 interceptors, supplies HIMARS and Javelin systems, owns the helicopter maker Sikorsky, and builds the Orion crew capsule and military satellites through its space division.

Standard Job Description

We are committed to work-life balance by promoting this hybrid telework opportunity. These job requirements allow the employee to work at a Lockheed Martin-designated office or job site for part of their schedule and has a predefined regular, recurring telework schedule for the remaining part of their work schedule.

What We're Doing

At Lockheed Martin, we bring together talented people, advanced technology, and mission-focused innovation to solve some of the world’s most complex challenges. At our Virginia Beach, VA location, our Ship Integration and Test team supports the development, construction, and delivery of the Multi-Mission Surface Combatant (MMSC) warship.

The Work

As an Electrical Engineer, you will provide technical expertise throughout the shipbuilding lifecycle, helping ensure electrical designs are accurately translated into production and that as-built systems meet performance, quality, and safety requirements. You’ll collaborate with senior engineers, shipyard personnel, and cross-functional teams to:

  • Update and release electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and harness layouts based on approved design changes.
  • Verify ship cable databases against design requirements and coordinate resolution of discrepancies.
  • Review 3-D electrical models using tools such as CAD and Navisworks to validate equipment placement, clearances, and cable routing.
  • Track and manage Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), communicating impacts and ensuring timely execution and closure.
  • Develop and review as-built electrical documentation based on field changes and verification data.
  • Conduct onboard ship checks to verify installations and ensure documentation accurately reflects the vessel.
  • Support resolution of critical production issues by developing change documentation and coordinating corrective actions.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical meetings, and briefings while maintaining clear documentation for internal and customer use.

Travel of up to 25% is required, including monthly collaboration meetings in Moorestown, NJ (typically 1-2 days) and periodic visits to the shipbuilder in Marinette, WI (typically 1-2 weeks at a time).

You’ll join a collaborative Ship Integration and Test organization in Virginia Beach working across engineering, production, quality, and shipyard teams to deliver complex naval platforms. Our team values technical excellence, accountability, and practical problem-solving.

Who You Are

You are an electrical engineer who enjoys working at the intersection of design and production. You can interpret engineering drawings, investigate discrepancies, communicate effectively across disciplines, and take ownership of technical issues through resolution. Experience with shipboard electrical systems, CAD/3-D modeling, cable databases, engineering change processes, or as-built documentation is highly valued.

Why Join Us

At Lockheed Martin, you’ll have the opportunity to apply your engineering expertise to mission-critical naval platforms while working with experienced professionals across the shipbuilding enterprise. You’ll gain hands-on exposure to ship integration, production, and system verification while contributing to technology that supports national security and the U.S. Navy.

Basic Qualifications

  • Willingness and capability to travel to the Marinette shipyard to address production issues, support testing events, and generate accurate as-built drawings.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products (Excel in particular) and AutoCAD
  • Ability to obtain & maintain a U.S. DoD security clearance at the SECRET level

Desired Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of shipboard power and lighting distribution systems.
  • Familiarity with U.S. Navy power-distribution standards,e.g., applicable NAVSEA instructions and MIL-STDs.
  • Hands-on experience working in a Navy shipyard environment or on a naval vessel, with an understanding of shipboard integration and testing processes.
  • Experience with ETAP software and Navisworks / ShipConstructor
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, meet established deadlines, and proactively seek clarification when needed.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration with customers and contractors alike.
