This position involves overseeing EHS protocols across multiple locations, ensuring that each site adheres to the highest standards of workplace safety and health. By conducting regular audits, providing training, and implementing EHS programs, the EHS Manager works to minimize risks, reduce workplace accidents, and maintain a safe, healthy environment for all employees. Through collaboration with various departments and leadership teams, this role supports the organization’s commitment to safety, demonstrating the importance of proactive measures in safeguarding the well-being of its workforce. The EH&S Area Manager is responsible for leading all environmental, health, safety, and regulatory compliance initiatives for underground mining operations. This position ensures full compliance with MSHA regulations, environmental permits, and company standards while driving a proactive safety culture focused on hazard recognition, risk reduction, and continuous improvement. The role works closely with mine operations, maintenance, engineering, contractors, and leadership teams to protect employees, equipment, and the environment in a complex underground mining environment.\nEssential Job Responsibilities \n Safety Leadership & Compliance\nProvide visible leadership and champion a culture of safe production throughout underground mining operations.\nEnsure compliance with all MSHA regulations, company policies, and industry best practices.\nLead underground safety inspections, workplace examinations, and compliance audits.\nMonitor critical safety systems including:\nGround control\nVentilation systems\nRefuge chambers\nEmergency escape routes\nHoisting systems\nMobile equipment operations\nExplosives handling and blasting activities\nDevelop and maintain site-specific safety management systems and procedures.\nFacilitate incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.\nTrack safety performance indicators and communicate results to mine leadership.\nUnderground Risk Management\nIdentify and mitigate hazards associated with underground mining operations, including:\nGround falls and rock bursts\nConfined spaces\nVentilation failures\nDiesel particulate exposure\nSilica dust exposure\nChemical hazards\nElectrical hazards\nMobile equipment interactions\n Conduct Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and risk assessments.\nEnsure corrective actions are implemented and sustained.\nParticipate in operational planning to manage risks before work begins.\nEnvironmental Compliance\nManage environmental programs related to:\nWater discharge and treatment\nStormwater management\nHazardous materials\nWaste management\nAir quality\nTailings and waste rock management\nMine closure and reclamation planning\nMaintain environmental permits and reporting requirements.\nCoordinate environmental inspections, audits, and regulatory interactions.\nInvestigate environmental incidents and oversee corrective actions.\nEmergency Preparedness & Mine Rescue\nLead underground emergency response planning and preparedness activities.\nCoordinate mine rescue team training and certifications.\nConduct underground emergency simulations and evacuation drills.\nEnsure readiness of rescue equipment, refuge stations, gas monitoring systems, and emergency communication systems.\nServe as a key member of the site's crisis management and emergency response teams.\nIndustrial Hygiene & Occupational Health\nDevelop and manage industrial hygiene monitoring programs.\nMonitor employee exposure to:\nRespirable crystalline silica\nDiesel particulate matter\nNoise\nWelding fumes\nHazardous chemicals\nHeat stress\nCoordinate occupational health surveillance programs.\nImplement engineering and administrative controls to reduce health-related risks.\nTraining & Workforce Development\nDevelop and deliver safety and environmental training programs.\nEnsure compliance with MSHA Part 46 and/or Part 48 training requirements.\nConduct new miner, annual refresher, and contractor orientation training.\nCoach supervisors and frontline leaders on safety leadership and accountability.\nPromote employee engagement through safety committees and behavioral safety initiatives.\nLeadership & Team Management\nManage site EHS professionals, coordinators, and contractors.\nDevelop annual EHS objectives, budgets, and improvement plans.\nProvide monthly performance reports to mine and corporate leadership.\nCollaborate with operations, maintenance, engineering, geology, and human resources teams.\nDrive continuous improvement initiatives focused on reducing injuries, environmental incidents, and regulatory risks.\nMinimum Qualifications\nRequired:\nConstruction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) or 5 years of experience in a construction safety position and hold equivalent required, obtain CHST within 12 months of accepting position.\nExtensive working knowledge of OSHA regulations, standards, and other applicable codes/regulations, with a proven track record of ensuring compliance.\nAbility to lead and manage a team of EHS personnel effectively, demonstrating strong leadership skills and fostering a culture of safety throughout the organization.\nExcellent verbal and written communication skills.\nPrior experience working within the heavy industrial construction industry, including manufacturing, pipeline, mining, food and beverage, power, and refining environments.\nProven ability to assess potential hazards and risks within divisional operations and develop and implement strategies to mitigate them effectively.\nExperience in incident investigation techniques and root cause analysis to identify underlying issues and develop solutions to prevent future occurrences.\nKnowledge of emergency response plans and procedures, coordinating drills and exercises, and ensuring readiness for potential emergencies.\nAbility to build relationships and collaborate with employees at all levels of the organization, as well as external stakeholders such as regulatory agencies and contractors.\nMSHA Certification or background preferred.\nFamiliarity with risk assessment methodologies such as Job Safety Analysis (JSA) or Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) to ensure comprehensive EHS practices.\nExperience in conducting EHS audits or inspections to identify and address potential safety hazards.\nCertification in First Aid/CPR, demonstrating the ability to respond effectively to safety incidents requiring immediate medical attention.\nProficiency in using MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) for documentation and reporting purposes.\nKnowledge of local, state, and federal building regulations with regard to safety, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and standards.\nFamiliarity with EHS management software or
