It is economic. Banks earn revenue from their balance sheets: they lend deposits, capture FX spreads, and hold funds as long as it is rational to do so. Clearing, the act of releasing funds quickly and predictably, competes directly with those economics. An institution designed to lend has a structural incentive to hold deposits; an institution designed to clear has an incentive to release them. When one institution does both, clearing loses. The result is unpredictable settlement, trapped capital, and a correspondent network shrinking by design.\nWhy Lorum\nLorum was founded on a different premise: clearing as the business, not a byproduct. The model has been operational since 2023 and grew 55x in 2025, with USD clearing now the majority of volumes alongside a growing treasury offering. We have applied for a U.S. national trust bank charter. The people we hire now will build the clearing and treasury infrastructure it unlocks.\nThe role\nWe are looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer to join our engineering team in London. You will own and improve the cloud infrastructure, CI/CD and observability that our clearing platform runs on, working directly with backend engineers and Security. As volumes grow and regulatory expectations rise, you will make production safer, more observable and easier to recover, and you will be trusted to form opinions and act on them.\nDay-to-day responsibilities\nDesign, build and maintain AWS infrastructure as code with Terraform, including state management and Git-driven workflows (Atlantis or equivalent) for safe, auditable changes\n\nBuild and run GitHub Actions pipelines for build, test, release and infrastructure deployment, with fast pre-merge checks and reliable environments for engineers\n\nRun production services: on-call, incident response, post-mortems and capacity planning, with a focus on resilience and failover\n\nInstrument our systems with metrics, logs and traces, and use that telemetry to drive reliability improvements\n\nWork with Security and GRC on SOC 2 / ISO 27001 requirements: secure deployments, secrets management, IAM, and encryption at rest and in transit\n\nAutomate repetitive operational work, build self-service tooling and runbooks for developers, review infrastructure changes and help raise engineering standards\n\nSuccess in the first 3 to 12 months\nWithin your first weeks, ship a concrete improvement to our infrastructure or pipelines\n\nBy month 3, be working autonomously across AWS, Terraform and GitHub Actions and have taken ownership of the tools that support them\n\nBy month 6, have led improvements to resilience and failover for core production services, with clear runbooks and tested recovery paths\n\nBy month 12, have traces and logs aggregated in a central observability stack that engineers use day to day, and be a trusted voice on infrastructure decisions and compliance priorities\n\nIdeal Candidate\nMust Haves\nExtensive experience operating production cloud infrastructure on AWS (we expect a senior-level track record; years band to be confirmed)\n\nStrong Terraform: writing modules, managing state and workspaces\n\nPractical experience with Atlantis or an equivalent for Git-driven Terraform automation\n\nHands-on experience building CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions or Workflows\n\nSolid Linux, networking and container fundamentals (Docker), with Kubernetes or ECS experience\n\nA strong testing and automation mindset: infrastructure tests, integration tests and pre-deploy checks\n\nExperience with observability stacks (Prometheus/Grafana, Datadog, ELK or similar)\n\nSecurity and compliance awareness: IAM, VPC, KMS and secrets management\n\nA clear communicator who is comfortable driving cross-functional operational work and incidents\n\nAble to work hybrid, 3 days/week in our London office\n\nNice to haves\nExperience in fintech, payments or other regulated, high-availability environments\n\nPostgreSQL operations, stream processing or event-driven architectures\n\nPolicy-as-code (OPA, Sentinel) and infrastructure-as-code security scanning\n\nTerraform Cloud/Enterprise, Terragrunt or similar\n\nSRE or platform engineering experience, including developer self-service tooling\n\nHow we work (attitudes & behaviours)\nComfortable having opinions and taking responsibility; you challenge ideas constructively, including from engineers and leadership\n\nAutonomous and comfortable with ambiguity: you are happy building something from scratch rather than waiting for a ticket\n\nScrappy and cost-conscious, with a high sense of urgency and real technical depth\n\nCollaborative and transparent: you communicate clearly and flag what you change, especially in a compliance-driven environment\n\nExcited by responsibility and by the problem of building infrastructure for regulated clearing\n\nOpen to using AI tools as part of your everyday engineering workflow\n\nBenefits\nFlexible vacation policy\n\nPrivate Healthcare\n\nEmployee stock ownership (ESOP)\n\nFlexible working and autonomy\n\nPay it forward days - we offer 2 annual pay it forward days where you can take time to volunteer for a charitable cause that is important to you.\n\nWellness days - we believe you can only work your best when you feel your best, and we know working at Lorum is intense, so we offer 3 wellness days every quarter where you can take time to re-energize\n\nApply: Interested?
