Banks earn revenue from their balance sheets: they lend deposits, capture FX spreads, and hold funds as long as it is rational to do so. Clearing, the act of releasing funds quickly and predictably, competes directly with those economics. An institution designed to lend has a structural incentive to hold deposits; an institution designed to clear has an incentive to release them. When one institution does both, clearing loses. The result is unpredictable settlement, trapped capital, and a correspondent network shrinking by design.\nWhy Lorum\nLorum was founded on a different premise: clearing as the business, not a byproduct. The model has been operational since 2023 and grew 55x in 2025, with USD clearing now the majority of volumes alongside a growing treasury offering. We have applied for a U.S. national trust bank charter. The people we hire now will build the clearing and treasury infrastructure it unlocks.\nThe role\nWe're looking for Backend Software Engineers to join our engineering team in London. You'll build the systems that move money for banks: the services, ledgers and integrations behind Lorum's USD clearing and treasury products, mostly in Rust. Correctness matters more than cleverness here. A payment that settles twice, or not at all, is a real problem for a real bank. You'll join a small, cross-functional team, own services end to end from design through deployment to production support, and work closely with Product, Operations and Security & GRC as we scale volumes and prepare for a regulated trust bank environment.\nDay-to-day responsibilities\nDesign, build and maintain backend services and APIs in Rust (or a similar strongly typed language, with a path to Rust)\n\nImplement robust domain logic for clearing, payments, accounts and reconciliation\n\nBuild systems for high-volume, high-reliability financial workloads, designed with metrics, logs and tracing from day one\n\nTake part in on-call and incident response for the services you own\n\nWork with Security and GRC so services meet requirements such as SOC 2 and ISO 27001\n\nPartner with Product to scope work, review code, write thorough tests and help raise the technical bar\n\nSuccess in the first 3 to 12 months\nShip production changes to a core clearing or treasury service, and join the on-call rotation for it, within 3 months\n\nOwn the design and delivery of a meaningful feature or integration end to end by month 6\n\nMeasurably improve the reliability, throughput or reconciliation accuracy of a service you own by month 12\n\nHelp raise engineering standards across the team through code review, testing and documentation\n\nIdeal Candidate\nMust Haves\n3+ years building backend systems in a strongly typed language (e.g. Rust, Go, Java, Kotlin, C++)\n\nCommercial experience with distributed services or APIs\n\nA real interest in working in Rust day to day, shown through prior Rust work or demonstrable learning. We don't expect you to know our exact stack\n\nSolid backend fundamentals: concurrency, data modelling, transactions, reliability and observability\n\nExperience designing and consuming APIs (REST/gRPC/GraphQL) and integrating with services and data stores\n\nA strong testing mindset and familiarity with CI/CD\n\nAble to work hybrid, 3 days/week in the London office\n\nNice to haves\nRust in production, or substantial personal/OSS Rust projects\n\nExperience in fintech, payments, banking, trading or other financial infrastructure\n\nEvent-driven architectures, message queues and stream processing\n\nPostgreSQL (or similar) and data-intensive workloads\n\nAWS/GCP, Docker and Kubernetes\n\nRegulated or high-assurance environments\n\nHow we work (attitudes & behaviours)\nCorrectness first: you'd rather ask one more question than ship an ambiguous money flow\n\nOwns problems end to end, from design to production support, not just executing tickets\n\nClear written communication; documents decisions and trade-offs\n\nComfortable with the pace and ambiguity of a fast-growing clearing and treasury infrastructure business\n\nLow ego, high standards; gives and takes direct feedback well\n\nBenefits\nFlexible vacation policy\n\nPrivate Healthcare\n\nEmployee stock ownership (ESOP)\n\nFlexible working and autonomy\n\nPay it forward days - we offer 2 annual pay it forward days where you can take time to volunteer for a charitable cause that is important to you.\n\nWellness days - we believe you can only work your best when you feel your best, and we know working at Lorum is intense, so we offer 3 wellness days every quarter where you can take time to re-energize\n\nEqual opportunity: Lorum is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other protected characteristic.","description_format":"text","description_chars":5021,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Flexible schedule","Flexible vacation policy"],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United Kingdom","iso":"GB","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Payment Processing & Gateways","Money Transfer & Remittances"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-09-29T16:17:33Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":65,"band":"ok","label":"Likely open","p_open":1,"p_active":0.723,"p_room":0.9,"age_days":16,"expected_fill_days":33,"reasons":["conf:2","velocity","win:mid"],"computed_at":"2026-10-15T05:46:00Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/lorum-software-engineer-backend-2","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/lorum-software-engineer-backend-2.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-15T15:20:33Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":23428,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-16T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":3784658},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=3784658"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Florum-software-engineer-backend-2"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Florum-software-engineer-backend-2"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Florum-software-engineer-backend-2"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/lorum-software-engineer-backend-2\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Florum-software-engineer-backend-2"}]}
