The ideal candidate will have superior news judgment, strong editing and writing skills, a commitment to collaboration, and a deep interest in journalism that engages with and reflects local communities.\nWhat you will do:\nExercise news judgment, applying journalistic frameworks to a keen knowledge of section topics, community issues, and history\nPlan, edit, coordinate, and publish daily and weekly sections\nWork cooperatively under pressure, multitask, and produce high-quality work in a deadline-driven environment\nTeam up with topic editors, quality editors, designers, and visual journalists to ensure all are able to do their best work, following newsroom best practices for collaboration, planning, and workflow\nMake sure production processes and deadlines are met\nDetermine the daily content of designated sections, including the hierarchy of stories and their placement within the sections\nEnsure accuracy and appropriate editing and headline creation\nChampion consistent application of style and grammar rules\nStay informed on local news and national trends, and what they mean for San Diego\nMeet daily and long-term deadlines\nWhat you will bring:\nAcademic degree or equivalent experience in journalism\nEditing experience at a reputable daily news publication or website\nDemonstrated news judgment and community knowledge\nCritical-thinking skills, with application in the areas of ethics, diversity, fairness, and credibility\nCommand of the fundamentals of journalism: fairness, accuracy, accessibility\nExcellent command of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and AP style\nAbility to make independent news decisions, initiate projects, and manage your own schedule\nExperience working with news service copy\nCollaborative spirit, inclusive approach, and comfort working with journalists throughout the newsroom\nBenefits and Compensation:\nThe hourly range is $33.80 - $38.15 + cell phone stipend.
