This team provides the critical software capabilities that capture, manage, and fulfil customer demand across every channel, powering digital experiences and business operations that serve millions of customers every year.\nYour “customers” are product teams, engineers, and business stakeholders and your mission is to enable them through scalable services, robust APIs, event-driven architectures, and exceptional engineering practices.\nThis is a role for an engineer who is excited by building high-volume transactional systems, designing reusable platform capabilities, and shaping how customer orders are processed, fulfilled, and managed across one of the UK's largest retailers.\nYour responsibilities\nDesign, build, and evolve backend services that support the complete customer order lifecycle, from order creation through to fulfilment and completion.\nDevelop scalable microservices and APIs using Java/Kotlin, enabling reliable and efficient order processing across multiple channels.\nContribute to event-driven architectures using Kafka to support high-volume transactional workflows across Payments, Pricing, and Fulfilment domains.\nDesign and evolve GraphQL and REST APIs, ensuring consistency, performance, scalability, and an excellent developer experience.\nBuild resilient, low-latency solutions using distributed databases, caching technologies, and modern architectural patterns.\nCollaborate closely with Product Managers, Engineers, Architects, and business stakeholders to solve complex commerce challenges.\nRequired skills\nA strong backend engineer with significant experience designing and operating scalable services in production environments.\nKnowledge working with Java and/or Kotlin and modern microservice architectures.\nPassionate about building reusable backend capabilities that enable multiple teams and products.\nSolid understanding of distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and asynchronous messaging patterns.\nMust have designed API-first platforms with GraphQL and REST-based services.\nComfortable working with high-volume transactional systems where reliability, performance, and resilience are critical.\nWhat we offer\nBeing a part of M&S is exactly that - playing your part to bring the magic of M&S to our customers every day.
