Manulife is a Canadian insurance and asset management group founded in Toronto in 1887, with the first Canadian prime minister as its founding president. It sells life and health insurance, annuities and retirement products in Canada, the United States under the John Hancock brand and across a dozen Asian markets, and runs Manulife Investment Management as a global asset manager for institutional and retail clients. Headquartered in Toronto and listed in Toronto, New York and Hong Kong, it earns a growing share of its profit in Asia and has been reducing its exposure to legacy long-term care liabilities through reinsurance transactions.

The bilingual Regional Field Underwriter is a key member of Manulife’s renowned Underwriting team, operating at the intersection of field-level collaboration and innovative underwriting practices. This role involves working closely with advisors, clients, and wholesalers, providing expert medical and financial field underwriting services, including case packaging and cover memo preparation. The Regional Field Underwriter plays a crucial role in supporting our Summit Experience and enhancing client satisfaction and business growth through excellence in field underwriting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct risk assessment and classification in alignment with Manulife's philosophy and standards.

  • Proactively and reactively support advisors and clients, particularly with large life insurance cases over $5 million.

  • Enhance sales through strong advisor relationships and excellence in field underwriting practices.

  • Prepare comprehensive cover letters and respond to preliminary opinions and inquiries promptly.

  • Engage directly with clients to provide curated preliminary opinions.

  • Collaborate with the National Field Underwriter and Head Office underwriters to ensure consistency and the highest quality decisions.

  • Maintain positive and effective relationships with internal and external partners, including advisors, wholesalers, and other specialists.

  • Stay updated with industry trends and guidelines by attending underwriting and sales team meetings.

  • Manage client expectations by identifying unwanted risks and suggesting alternative product solutions.

  • Align with consumer laws and regulations regarding risk classification, confidentiality, and disclosure.

  • Identify and propose solutions to enhance processes and customer experience.

  • Create and deliver presentations and conduct regular in-person meetings to strengthen advisor relationships.

  • Represent Manulife externally.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 15 years of experience as an underwriter, specializing in large life insurance cases over $5 million.

  • Proven track record in underwriting with a sales and relationship-focused mindset.

  • Strong understanding of insurance products, financial and medical guidelines, and non-medical risks impacting mortality.

  • Experience with financial reports and training in anti-money laundering practices.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with advisors, wholesalers, and underwriters, and think creatively to provide solutions.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams.

  • Strong time management, organizational skills, and ability to analyze complex information.

  • Fully bilingual (French/English): The successful candidate will be required to communicate in English and French in order to support clients from all jurisdictions/provinces within Canada.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working towards, or completion of FALU, FLMI, and ACS designations.

When you join our team:

  • We’ll empower you to learn and grow the career you want.

  • We’ll recognize and support you in a flexible environment where well-being and inclusion are more than just words.

  • As part of our global team, we’ll support you in shaping the future you want to see.
