Our interview process will include a discussion of how you use AI in your engineering workflow.\nWhat You’ll Do\nAs a Staff Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing and operating significant areas of our routing services. In this role, you can expect to:\nDesign and implement scalable services for our API and routing engine tiers, following best practices for deployment, resilience, and observability.\n\nDesign and improve services that power the data consumption and storage of the routing data.\n\nDrive the design, development, and testing of Mapbox tools\n\nShape internal tools and automations to make the whole engineering life easier and fun.\n\nDrive design and development of services quality metrics and analytics.\n\nRun and design experiments to evaluate the quality, reliability, and capacity requirements of our user-facing navigation products.\n\nParticipate in end-to-end feature implementation within the larger navigation team; review code and design documents, shepherd feature releases, and participate in an on-call rotation.\n\nWork with product owners, sales engineering, and management to drive future product direction.\n\nParticipate in an on-call rotation to ensure our systems remain available to customers 12/7. Team members alternate as the on-call primary responder, which may require immediate response outside normal working hours, including weekends.\n\nNavigation API services interact with many internal systems at Mapbox, making this a high-visibility team with great opportunities to collaborate across the company.\nWhat We Believe are Important Traits for This Role\nExperience in engineering web services in either Rust or Typescript (Node.js)\n\nExperience building highly-available API services within container-based environments (e.g., Docker, ECS, Kubernetes, etc. on AWS).\n\nProficiency in implementing monitoring instrumentation, triaging incidents, resolving customer issues, and continuous product improvement.\n\nKnowledge of operating systems and distributed systems (e.g., fault-tolerance, consistency, service discovery, etc.)\n\nProven ability to design long-term technical strategies that balance immediate product delivery with the reduction of systemic technical debt across multiple departments.\n\nExtensive experience driving high-visibility initiatives that improve engineering standards and operational excellence for the cross-functional teams\n\nStrong English verbal and written communication skills.
