This position is part of the Ceded Close & Regulatory department within Markel’s Finance group and reports to the Manager, Ceded Close & Regulatory.Job Responsibilities\nOwn the accuracy and completeness of monthly reinsurance cessions, including system-generated and manually booked cessions.\nParticipate in ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of monthly and quarterly accounting functions, including cession analysis and complex manual reinsurance calculations.\nPrepare and upload general ledger and data warehouse entries, including adjusting journal entries, and support monthly general ledger close and reporting deliverables.\nPerform monthly reinsurance balance sheet account reconciliations, including identification and remediation of issues in compliance with SOX control and audit requirements.\nPrepare monthly and quarterly financial reporting and variance analysis packages.\nUnderstand reinsurance treaty contract language pertaining to accounting and contractual requirements, as applicable.\nEnsure effective SOX controls are maintained and followed, and maintain adherence to department processes and procedures.\nAssist with internal and external audit reviews, as needed.\nWork closely with Reinsurance Operations and other functional areas, including Global Ceded Re, Actuarial, Underwriting, Claims, IT, Finance, and Close Control & Reporting, to resolve issues and support achievement of business goals.\nLead or assist with special projects, system enhancements, systems integration, testing, data pulls, and ad hoc reporting requests, as needed.\nCollaborate with teammates and management to identify, design, and implement systematic process improvements for greater efficiency, effectiveness, execution, and analysis.\nParticipate in other strategic accounting and business projects as they arise.\nEducation\nBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a similar field required.\nWork Experience\n1+ years of relevant experience.\nExperience in the insurance and/or reinsurance industry preferred.\nSkill Sets\nStrong computer skills, including a high degree of proficiency in Excel.\nHigh degree of flexibility and responsiveness to change in a fast-paced environment.\nDetail-oriented, with strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.\nAbility to manage multiple tasks independently and simultaneously under tight deadlines.\nDemonstrated personal accountability and ownership when responding to challenging work and deadlines.\nStrong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.\nEnergetic, interactive, reliable, and respectful team player.\nExperience with Oracle and Smart View applications preferred.\nExperience with Alteryx, Power BI, and SQL preferred.\nExperience with AI tools, such as Microsoft Copilot and Claude, preferred.\nUS Work Authorization\nUS Work Authorization required. The posted salary range reflects the lowest and highest base salary applicable to this role across our U.S. locations. Individual offers are determined based on geographic location, experience, qualifications, internal equity, and other job-related factors. As a result, the salary offered for a specific location will fall within a narrower range than the overall range displayed in this posting.
