Assigned larger, more important and more complex accounts. Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges. Understand state laws, including cancellation and non-renewal, within assigned territory to properly transact business within each state. Knowledgeable in coverage forms and policy language; appropriate utilization of forms and exclusions. Assist with resolving premium audit disputes within assigned agents/brokers. Viewed as an expert within a product area and able to mentor less experienced underwriters.Responsibilities:\nReview, analyze, accept, and decline Ocean Marine risks to ensure profitability for Markel.\nUnderwrite and select new business that will produce an underwriting profit.\nManage the existing renewal book and implement corrective measures, as needed, to meet profitability expectations.\nCommunicate with regional managers and national product line leaders on individual accounts, current and proposed producers, and make recommendations concerning operations, systems and procedures when appropriate.\nParticipate in audits and/or underwriting meetings as required.\nBuild and maintain quality relationships with key producers\nCross-sell opportunities with other Markel divisions through the promotion of Markel’s products and services.\nReview forms and pricing of competitors and be able to effectively market the Markel product within the competitive landscape\nQualifications:\nMinimum 5+ years of current experience underwriting profitable ocean marine business\nDemonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflective of progression of positions of increasing responsibility.\nAbility to work in a fast-paced environment\nMust have excellent oral and written communication skills, and skilled presentation aptitude\nMicrosoft Office skills to include MS Word and MS Excel.\nStrong analytical, organizational, and time management skills;\nFlexible to travel up to 25% travel when appropriate\nMust be a team player that enjoys a flexible and spontaneous business environment with a desire to succeed.\nUS Work Authorization\nUS Work Authorization required. The posted salary range reflects the lowest and highest base salary applicable to this role across our U.S. locations. Individual offers are determined based on geographic location, experience, qualifications, internal equity, and other job-related factors. As a result, the salary offered for a specific location will fall within a narrower range than the overall range displayed in this posting.
