This position serves as the primary technical resource for robotic welding equipment, welding process qualification, operator training, weld quality validation, and implementation of automated welding technologies.The role functions as a liaison between Welding Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Product Engineering, Operations, and Quality to ensure robotic welding systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all applicable Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Qualification Procedure Records (QPR), Welder Qualifications, AAR requirements, and company standards. The position also supports future automation initiatives through participation in equipment selection, deployment, testing, process development, and workforce training.\nEssential Duties and Responsibilities\nRobotic Welding Operations\nProgram, troubleshoot, and optimize robotic welding systems used in tank car manufacturing.\nMonitor robotic welding processes and adjust welding parameters to achieve quality, productivity, and cost objectives.\nMaintain robotic welding equipment settings, software, and operating documentation.\nWork with Maintenance and Engineering to identify and implement reliability improvements that improve equipment uptime and efficiency\nSupport startup, commissioning, and validation of new robotic welding systems.\nWelding Qualification and Compliance\nMaintain robotic welding qualifications and qualification records.\nDevelop and administer test plates, qualification coupons, and robotic weld testing programs.\nEnsure robotic welding processes remain compliant with approved WPS and QPR requirements.\nSupport internal and external audits related to welding processes and qualifications.\nReview weld quality data, use root cause analysis techniques, and recommend corrective actions when required.\nEnsure compliance with applicable AAR, customer, regulatory, and company welding requirements.\nTraining and Workforce Development\nTrain hourly employees, technicians, and supervisors on robotic welding systems and automated welding processes.\nDevelop training materials, qualification standards, and operator certification requirements.\nEvaluate operator proficiency and recommend additional training when necessary.\nSupport implementation of best practices related to automation and robotic welding technology.\nAutomation and Technology Deployment\nParticipate in evaluation, specification, and purchasing of robotic welding and automated manufacturing equipment.\nAssist in development and execution of automated welding projects.\nServe on cross-functional project teams supporting manufacturing automation initiatives.\nCollaborate with Product Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering to ensure designs, tooling, fixtures, and welding processes are optimized for automation.\nIdentify opportunities for process improvement through automation and advanced manufacturing technologies.\nQuality and Continuous Improvement\nInspect and evaluate weld quality produced by robotic systems.\nEnsure quality compliance based on welding performance data.\nAnalyze current processes and implement process improvements.\nCreate 5S structure for current and new procedures.\nSupport root cause investigations related to welding quality issues.\nDevelop standardized work practices for robotic welding operations.\nLead continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, delivery, and productivity.\nRequired Qualifications\nAssociate degree in Welding Technology, Robotics, Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered.\nExperience with robotic welding systems, automated manufacturing equipment, or industrial robotics.\nWorking knowledge of MIG, SAW, and FCAW welding processes, welding symbols, metallurgy, Welding Procedure Specifications, and qualification standards.\nUnderstanding of automated manufacturing systems and controls.\nWorking knowledge of Fronius, Lincoln, and Miller power sources\nAbility to interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and welding documentation.\nStrong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.\nEffective communication and training skills.\nProficient in Microsoft Office applications.\nPreferred Qualifications\nBachelor's degree in Engineering, Welding Engineering Technology, Robotics, or related field.\nRobotic programming experience with offline programming (Visual Components).\nExperience with CAD/CAM software (SolidWorks)\nAWS, CWI, or other welding-related certifications.\nExperience in railcar, heavy manufacturing, pressure vessel, or automated fabrication environments.\nProject management experience supporting capital or automation projects.\nKnowledge of Kuka, Yaskawa, Fanuc industrial robots.\nPhysical and Work Environment Requirements\nAbility to work in both office and manufacturing environments.\nFrequent plant-floor interaction around welding and automated production equipment.\nAbility to travel periodically to support training, equipment suppliers, or other locations.\nAbility to wear required PPE and safely work around industrial equipment.\nDisclaimer\nPlease note the duties listed are not set forth for purposes of limiting the assignment of work.
