Senior Software Engineer II

We are looking for a highly skilled Software Engineer Lead with strong expertise in backend software development to design, build, and scale modern, cloud-native applications in the area of Privacy and Data Governance, building trust in our customers to responsibly use their data at a global scale by operationalising privacy laws and data governance best practices.

You will play a key role in architecting scalable systems, mentoring junior engineers, and driving best practices across development and operations. The ideal candidate will have deep experience working with AWS services, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and advanced database design using SQL, and be keen to learn and expand into other areas of data governance such as data catalogue, data quality, and data lineage.

Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, and maintain robust backend services using Python (advanced level preferred) and Java.
• Build scalable APIs (REST/GraphQL) and microservices.
• Ensure code quality, testing, and performance optimisation.
• Implement authentication, authorisation, and secure data handling practices.
• Integrate 3rd-party SaaS tools with Marriott systems.
• Integration with Kafka and Airflow.
• Provide consultation for routine and complex systems development.
• Perform technical troubleshooting.

Enabling Data Governance Tools:

• Learn and experiment with new data governance tools from 3rd-party vendors.
• Evaluate new features.
• Create technical documentation.
• Provide technical support for vendor tools for our users.

Requirements:

• 6+ years of experience (Backend Development).
• Advanced proficiency in Python and Java for backend development.
• Expert-level SQL skills (complex queries, optimisation, database design).
• Hands-on knowledge of AWS ecosystem (S3 EKS, EMR, Lambda, and more).
• Strong experience with ETL data processing.
• Strong understanding of microservices architecture.
• Proficiency in Git-based version control workflows.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and system design capabilities.
• Experience leading and mentoring more junior software engineers.

Nice to Have:

• Familiarity with MDM tools such as Stibo, Reltio.
• Familiarity with Data Catalogue tools such as Atlan, Alation, Informatica EDC.
• Experience with using the Snowflake database.
• Experience with Airflow workflow orchestration.
• Experience with Gen AI / Agentic AI systems (LLMs, prompt engineering, AI workflows).
• Experience with event-driven architecture (Kafka, SQS, SNS).
• Familiarity with monitoring & observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK).
• Exposure to ML pipelines or data engineering workflows.
• Knowledge of security best practices in cloud environments.
• Undergraduate/bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, or a related field.
