We are looking for a highly skilled Software Engineer Lead with strong expertise in backend software development to design, build, and scale modern, cloud-native applications in the area of Privacy and Data Governance, building trust in our customers to responsibly use their data at a global scale by operationalising privacy laws and data governance best practices.
You will play a key role in architecting scalable systems, mentoring junior engineers, and driving best practices across development and operations. The ideal candidate will have deep experience working with AWS services, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and advanced database design using SQL, and be keen to learn and expand into other areas of data governance such as data catalogue, data quality, and data lineage.
Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain robust backend services using Python (advanced level preferred) and Java.
- Build scalable APIs (REST/GraphQL) and microservices.
- Ensure code quality, testing, and performance optimisation.
- Implement authentication, authorisation, and secure data handling practices.
- Integrate 3rd-party SaaS tools with Marriott systems.
- Integration with Kafka and Airflow.
- Provide consultation for routine and complex systems development.
- Perform technical troubleshooting.
Enabling Data Governance Tools:
- Learn and experiment with new data governance tools from 3rd-party vendors.
- Evaluate new features.
- Create technical documentation.
- Provide technical support for vendor tools for our users.
Requirements:
- 6+ years of experience (Backend Development).
- Advanced proficiency in Python and Java for backend development.
- Expert-level SQL skills (complex queries, optimisation, database design).
- Hands-on knowledge of AWS ecosystem (S3 EKS, EMR, Lambda, and more).
- Strong experience with ETL data processing.
- Strong understanding of microservices architecture.
- Proficiency in Git-based version control workflows.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and system design capabilities.
- Experience leading and mentoring more junior software engineers.
Nice to Have:
- Familiarity with MDM tools such as Stibo, Reltio.
- Familiarity with Data Catalogue tools such as Atlan, Alation, Informatica EDC.
- Experience with using the Snowflake database.
- Experience with Airflow workflow orchestration.
- Experience with Gen AI / Agentic AI systems (LLMs, prompt engineering, AI workflows).
- Experience with event-driven architecture (Kafka, SQS, SNS).
- Familiarity with monitoring & observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK).
- Exposure to ML pipelines or data engineering workflows.
- Knowledge of security best practices in cloud environments.
- Undergraduate/bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, or a related field.
