Job Summary

The Chief Scientific Officer, Research Strategy and Operations serves as the senior scientific and operational leader for the Korzenik Lab at the Resnek Family Center for Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis Research. Working in close partnership with the Principal Investigator, this role provides high-level leadership across research strategy, program operations, personnel management, regulatory oversight, and institutional collaboration in support of a complex and growing research enterprise.

This individual will play a pivotal role in shaping and executing the Center’s scientific and operational vision across basic, translational, and clinical research initiatives. The Executive Lab Director will align people, processes, and resources to advance scientific priorities, strengthen organizational infrastructure, and position the lab for sustained impact, growth, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

The ideal candidate is an accomplished research leader with a strong scientific foundation, exceptional operational judgment, and the ability to lead through influence in a highly collaborative academic medical environment.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Scientific and Program Leadership

Serve as a senior partner to the Principal Investigator in defining and advancing the scientific and operational vision of the Korzenik Lab and the Resnek Family Center. Provide leadership across a diverse research portfolio spanning basic, translational, and clinical investigation. Guide the planning, prioritization, and execution of research initiatives to ensure alignment with programmatic goals and institutional standards. Contribute to scientific analysis, interpretation, and the development of presentations, reports, publications, and other scholarly outputs. Anticipate scientific and operational barriers and drive solutions that support research progress and program growth.

Research Operations and Infrastructure

Lead all aspects of laboratory operations, ensuring a high-performing, well-organized, and scalable research environment. Oversee laboratory infrastructure, workflows, scheduling, space allocation, equipment, vendor relationships, and inventory systems. Design and implement operational systems that enhance efficiency, resource stewardship, and execution across the research enterprise. Establish best practices and operating procedures that support consistency, quality, and long-term sustainability.

Leadership, Talent, and Culture

Provide leadership, supervision, and mentorship to research staff, trainees, and laboratory personnel. Build an engaged, inclusive, and accountable team culture grounded in collaboration, professionalism, and scientific excellence. Oversee talent-related processes including onboarding, training compliance, role clarity, and day-to-day staff support. Help develop internal capacity by coaching team members and strengthening operational and research capabilities across the lab.

Regulatory, Compliance, and Risk Oversight

Provide senior oversight for research compliance, laboratory safety, biosafety practices, and regulatory readiness. Direct the preparation, maintenance, and monitoring of relevant research and animal protocols. Serve as the primary liaison to institutional compliance offices, animal care programs, and administrative partners on regulatory and operational matters. Ensure systems are in place to support audit readiness, protocol renewals, and compliance continuity.

Financial and Resource Stewardship

Lead budget planning, expenditure oversight, and financial forecasting for the laboratory and related research activities. Partner with finance, grants, and administrative teams to support sound post-award management and operational decision-making. Monitor resource utilization and identify opportunities for cost containment, vendor optimization, and long-term sustainability. Provide the Principal Investigator with strategic insight into spending trends, operational needs, and resource planning.

Institutional and External Partnership Development

Represent the lab in interactions with institutional leaders, researchers, clinicians, and external collaborators. Strengthen coordination across multidisciplinary teams and support the development of collaborative initiatives and shared resources. Serve as a trusted connector across scientific, operational, and administrative stakeholders to enable effective execution and partnership.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a biological, chemical, biomedical, or related scientific field required. Significant experience in research leadership, laboratory operations, or research administration in an academic medical center, hospital, or biomedical research environment required.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree preferred; Master’s degree or PhD strongly favored. Demonstrated success overseeing complex research programs, teams, compliance processes, and budgets strongly preferred. Experience working across institutional systems and with multidisciplinary collaborators preferred.

Working Environment

This position is based in the Korzenik Lab at the Resnek Family Center for Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis Research and supports a high-impact research program dedicated to advancing understanding and treatment of primary sclerosing cholangitis through integrated basic, translational, and clinical investigation.
