Civil/Structural Engineer - Senior Civil/Structural Engineer
Location: Bristol, England
Job Type: Full-time
Salary/Package: Competitive (varied bandings on experience level)
About the Client:
Our client is an international multidisciplinary engineering consultancy delivering complex, high-impact infrastructure across energy, transport, water, and the built environment. In the UK nuclear sector, they provide specialised civil, structural, and geotechnical design, safety analysis, and project management services.
Operating in highly regulated environments, their teams focus on delivering practical, low-carbon engineering solutions that support safety, long-term climate resilience, and operational excellence across flagship infrastructure programmes.
About the Opportunity:
This role supports Nuclear New Build projects, focusing on Nuclear Island structures for major programmes including Hinkley Point C (HPC) and Sizewell C (SZC). The Structural Engineer / Senior Structural Engineer will combine advanced structural analysis and design with technical coordination, delivery leadership, and site execution support.
In this position, you will produce and assure high-quality structural engineering deliverables, coordinate interfaces across international multidisciplinary teams, and ensure nuclear structures comply with strict safety, quality, schedule, and technical standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Structural Analysis & Design Execution
EPR Structural Design: Design and analyse reinforced-concrete and structural steel elements for EPR nuclear power plant buildings.
Finite Element Modeling (FEA): Prepare and independently check complex structural calculations and finite-element models using ANSYS APDL or comparable analysis software.
Action & Load Assessments: Evaluate structural integrity against diverse design actions, including seismic/dynamic effects, impact loads, environmental conditions, and construction sequencing loads.
Code Compliance: Apply international design codes, project specifications, and nuclear standards, including Eurocodes and ETC-C requirements.
Delivery Leadership & Documentation
Project Governance: Manage assigned engineering workstreams to ensure scope, schedule, quality, and commercial budgets are maintained.
Traceable Records: Draft and review clear, auditable design reports, calculations, structural drawings, and technical specifications, maintaining full design history traceability.
Technical Assurance: Participate in design reviews, technical checking, and formal approval processes in line with project procedures and delegated authority.
Interface & Team Coordination
Multidisciplinary Alignment: Coordinate tasks across an international team of engineers and designers, providing technical direction and constructive reviews.
Stakeholder Collaboration: Interface closely with engineering leads, BIM/CAD detailing teams, project managers, client representatives, and site contractors.
Technical Communication: Present complex technical topics clearly to both specialist and non-specialist stakeholders during project reviews and client meetings.
Candidate Profile:
Essential Requirements & Qualifications
Education: Degree (BSc/BEng/MEng) in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent relevant qualification).
Reinforced Concrete Design: Substantial experience in the design and analysis of heavy reinforced-concrete structures, backed by a strong understanding of structural behavior and constructability.
FEA Expertise: Practical experience in structural finite-element analysis, specifically using ANSYS APDL or equivalent FEA packages.
Standards & Codes: Working knowledge of Eurocodes and standard structural engineering specifications.
Design Delivery: Proven experience seeing detailed design deliverables through to construction phase transition.
Desirable Criteria
Advanced Qualifications: Master's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
Professional Chartership: Chartered Engineer status (CEng MIStructE or CEng MICE) or demonstrable progress toward chartership.
Nuclear Sector Background: Direct experience in nuclear new build, heavy industry, or highly regulated safety-critical environments.
EPR Standards: Familiarity with ETC-C codes and specific structural requirements for EPR nuclear power stations.
Key Competencies
Safety & Quality Focus: Rigorous attention to detail with sound engineering judgment and commitment to nuclear safety culture.
Technical Ownership: Proactive approach to taking responsibility for complex structural challenges and multidisciplinary interfaces.
Adaptability: Willingness to adopt new digital delivery tools, including 3D reinforcement modeling workflows.
