Mattel is an American toy company founded in 1945 in a Los Angeles garage, and it owns some of the most valuable character franchises in the industry including Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price, American Girl, Masters of the Universe and Monster High. Alongside manufacturing and selling toys it has built a film and television arm to exploit those properties directly, following the commercial success of the Barbie film in 2023, and it licenses its characters into games, apparel and experiences. Headquartered in El Segundo, California and listed on Nasdaq, it competes with Hasbro and with the digital entertainment now taking children's attention.

CREATIVITY IS OUR SUPERPOWER. It’s our heritage and it’s also our future. Because we don’t just make toys. We create innovative products and experiences that inspire fans, entertain audiences and develop children through play. Mattel is at its best when every member of our team feels respected, included, and heard-when everyone can show up as themselves and do their best work every day. We value and share an infinite range of ideas and voices that evolve and broaden our perspectives with a reach that extends into all our brands, partners, and suppliers.

The Opportunity:

We are seeking a commercially minded, technology-savvy attorney to join our legal team and support a broad range of media buying, advertising technology, performance media and agency-related matters. This role will serve as a key legal partner to marketing, media, influencer engagement, procurement, privacy, technology and business stakeholders, providing practical advice on sophisticated digital advertising arrangements as well as traditional media buying and agency engagements. The Counsel position is in Mattel’s corporate headquarters in El Segundo, CA.

What Your Impact Will Be:

This is an opportunity to join a collaborative and evolving legal team, take ownership of high-impact matters and expand the role as the company’s media, advertising technology and performance marketing activities continue to grow. This position involves managing a large range and high volume of media and agency transactions. This position requires an ability to effectively work within and manage a sophisticated forms-contract practice. This position will evolve over time as Mattel’s business and legal needs evolve

What We’re Looking For:

The ability to provide thoughtful, proactive, strategic legal and business advice. Skilled at identifying issues early, and then creatively solving them, as well as spotting company-wide trends and building a consensus in managing them efficiently on a company-wide basis. A team player who can multi-task and work well under pressure, with frequently changing priorities and sometimes conflicting objectives. Excellent negotiating, drafting, and practice-management skills. Maintain a professional demeanor, in writing and in person, with support staff, business colleagues, senior management, and outside counsel. An ability to adopt technology solutions and seek efficiencies in managing work. High ethical standards. An ability to “manage up” and play well with others. A sense of humor is a plus.

The ideal candidate has at least 3 years of relevant legal experience, including meaningful experience with digital media, advertising technology, data-driven marketing or media agency agreements.

The attorney should understand how modern advertising campaigns are planned, purchased, measured and optimized across digital platforms and should be comfortable translating complex legal, technical and commercial issues into clear, actionable guidance.

Professional Licensing: Good standing in at least one state bar and, if not licensed to practice in California, an ability and willingness to register to practice in California pursuant to California’s in-house counsel registration requirements.

Education: An undergraduate degree, and strong academic performance at a J.D. from a highly-rated law school.
