This system doesn't just see what something looks like; it understands everything from a single pixel. We call this Superintelligent Vision.\nOur team has delivered technologies to Mars for NASA/JPL, designed advanced sensors for U.S. Defense, and frontier artificial intelligence systems. We are now building the next generation of space- and airborne-based sensing systems.\nAbout the Role\nMatter is hiring a Mechanical Designer focused on airborne payload hardware. This role will turn engineering concepts into detailed, manufacturable designs and support hardware from early packaging through fabrication, assembly, integration, and flight testing.\nKey Responsibilities\nCreate and maintain detailed 3D CAD mechanical designs, assemblies, drawings, and bills of material for airborne optomechanical and optoelectrical payload hardware, including lens housings, fixtures, mounts, and alignment mechanisms.\n\nTranslate system, optical, electrical, thermal, and structural constraints into practical packaging solutions. Perform tolerance and basic thermal and structural analyses, select materials, and ensure mechanical designs meet performance and reliability requirements.\n\nWork with optical engineers to translate system-level optical requirements into mechanical designs, then collaborate with manufacturing, supply chain, and suppliers to optimize designs for manufacturability and cost.\n\nSupport prototype builds, fit checks, integration, metrology, test-fixture development, and hardware troubleshooting.\n\nMaintain configuration discipline and incorporate lessons from fabrication, test, and flight operations into design updates.\n\nQualifications\nRequired\nTypically requires a degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics and at least five years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree in a related field and at least three years of experience.\n\nStrong proficiency with NX or an equivalent CAD tool and a deep understanding of precision mechanical design, ASME Y14.5-2018 GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, materials, and manufacturing processes.\n\nExperience designing optical-system components such as lenses, lasers, sensors, and imaging assemblies; ability to collaborate with optical, electrical, structural, thermal, and systems engineers; and ability to communicate technical results to internal and external technical and nontechnical audiences.\n\nHands-on experience with prototyping, metrology, testing, and verification of optomechanical assemblies for harsh environments, including thermal management, material selection, adhesives, and mounting techniques.\n\nPreferred\nExperience with airborne, spaceborne, aerospace, precision-instrument, robotics, or other ruggedized and mass- and volume-constrained hardware, including work in regulated aerospace or defense environments.\n\nExperience packaging optical and electronic components with tight alignment or environmental requirements; familiarity with cleanroom practices and optical assembly techniques.\n\nFamiliarity with rapid prototyping and low-volume production environments, hand and light power tools, and finite-element analysis for modal, shock, and random-vibration loads; Ansys Workbench experience is a plus.\n\nWhat Success Looks Like\nDesigns are complete, manufacturable, and released on time with clear configuration control.\n\nHardware assembles and integrates as intended with minimal avoidable rework.\n\nDesign updates incorporate evidence from build, test, and flight operations quickly and accurately.\n\nLocation\nThis role is based in El Segundo, CA, and requires onsite work.\nITAR Requirements\nTo comply with U.S. export regulations, applicants must be one of the following:\nA U.S. citizen or national\n\nA lawful permanent resident (green card holder)\n\nEligible to obtain required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State\n\nEmployee Offerings and Benefits\nAt Matter, we believe in rewarding high performance and providing the support you need to thrive. Our compensation and benefits package includes:\nCompetitive compensation based on experience\n\nEarly-stage equity package\n\n100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision coverage\n\nOpportunity to work on novel sensing, data, and AI systems with real-world deployment paths to the largest industries in the world\n\nMatter Intelligence is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds who can raise the ambition and performance of the team.","description_format":"text","description_chars":4694,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":5,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"bachelor","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Equity"],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":[],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-09-26T15:11:07Z"}],"visa":[{"country":"US","licensed_sponsor":true,"evidence":"H-1B filings in 12 months: 3","filings_12m":3,"filings_prev_12m":0,"green_card_filings_12m":0,"median_offered_wage_usd":162500,"route":null,"cap_exempt":false,"checked_at":"2026-10-03T21:08:04+00:00","sources":["US Department of Labor: LCA disclosure data (H-1B, H-1B1, E-3)"],"filings_for_role_12m":0}],"liveness":{"score":55,"band":"ok","label":"Likely open","p_open":1,"p_active":0.734,"p_room":0.75,"age_days":27,"expected_fill_days":32,"reasons":["conf:3","velocity","win:late"],"computed_at":"2026-10-12T06:55:09Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/matter-intelligence-mechanical-designer-airborne","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/matter-intelligence-mechanical-designer-airborne.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-12T17:41:35Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":28480,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-13T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":2179048},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=2179048"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fmatter-intelligence-mechanical-designer-airborne"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fmatter-intelligence-mechanical-designer-airborne"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fmatter-intelligence-mechanical-designer-airborne"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/matter-intelligence-mechanical-designer-airborne\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fmatter-intelligence-mechanical-designer-airborne"}]}
