This system doesn't just see what something looks like; it understands everything from a single pixel. We call this Superintelligent Vision.\nOur team has delivered technologies to Mars for NASA/JPL, designed advanced sensors for U.S. Defense, and frontier artificial intelligence systems. We are now building the next generation of space- and airborne-based sensing systems.\nAbout the Role\nMatter is hiring an Optical Engineer to help design, integrate, calibrate, and operate the optical path for our sensing payload. This role will work across optical design, optomechanics, calibration, systems engineering, and test.\nKey Responsibilities\nGenerate optical designs and system trade studies for advanced electro-optic sensors, balancing performance, manufacturability, and end-user utility across the required spectral range.\n\nDecompose system requirements into optical system and subsystem requirements; derive optical specifications, drawings, interfaces, alignment approaches, tolerances, and performance budgets with adjacent engineering teams.\n\nPerform optical analysis-including image simulation, radiometry, stop analysis, and stray-light analysis-and plan and execute optical assembly, alignment, characterization, calibration, and integration activities.\n\nSupport the design of optical test equipment, environmental, ground, and flight testing; analyze results, investigate performance gaps, and lead root-cause efforts.\n\nParticipate in design reviews and document optical requirements, test methods, calibration results, as-built optical designs, and configuration changes.\n\nQualifications\nRequired\nAdvanced degree in optics, physics, engineering, mathematics, or a related field, with a strong foundation in optical engineering and experience applying it to physical systems.\n\nProficiency with Zemax or equivalent optical design and analysis software, along with experience in optical alignment, characterization, calibration, laboratory test methods, and design of test equipment and validation procedures.\n\nExperience with stray-light analysis in FRED or equivalent, modeling optical alignment procedures, and using performance-prediction tools for novel optical systems.\n\nHands-on experience building and aligning optical assemblies, with a cross-functional approach to integration and troubleshooting.\n\nPreferred\nExperience with imaging, spectroscopy, remote sensing, or precision optical instruments; familiarity with diffractive or meta-optics applications, manufacturing, and modeling.\n\nExperience working across broad spectral ranges and tightly constrained payload packaging.\n\nFamiliarity with flight test, environmental test, and calibration under operational conditions.\n\nWhat Success Looks Like\nOptical system meets defined performance and calibration requirements.\n\nAlignment and calibration processes are repeatable, documented, and practical for field operations.\n\nFlight-test data is translated quickly into clear root causes and design or process improvements.\n\nLocation\nThis role is based in El Segundo, CA, and requires onsite work.\nITAR Requirements\nTo comply with U.S. export regulations, applicants must be one of the following:\nA U.S. citizen or national\n\nA lawful permanent resident (green card holder)\n\nEligible to obtain required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State\n\nEmployee Offerings and Benefits\nAt Matter, we believe in rewarding high performance and providing the support you need to thrive. Our compensation and benefits package includes:\nCompetitive compensation based on experience\n\nEarly-stage equity package\n\n100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision coverage\n\nOpportunity to work on novel sensing, data, and AI systems with real-world deployment paths to the largest industries in the world\n\nMatter Intelligence is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds who can raise the ambition and performance of the team.","description_format":"text","description_chars":4205,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Equity"],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":[],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-09-26T15:11:07Z"}],"liveness":{"score":68,"band":"ok","label":"Likely open","p_open":1,"p_active":0.676,"p_room":1,"age_days":13,"expected_fill_days":96,"reasons":["conf:11","velocity","win:early"],"computed_at":"2026-10-01T05:45:00Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/matter-intelligence-optical-engineer","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/matter-intelligence-optical-engineer.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-02T02:58:52Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","usage":{"tier":"crawler","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":4041,"day_limit":5000,"remaining_today":959,"minute_limit":60,"resets_at":"2026-10-03T00:00:00Z"}}}
