This system doesn't just see what something looks like; it understands everything from a single pixel. We call this Superintelligent Vision.\nOur team has delivered technologies to Mars for NASA/JPL, designed advanced sensors for U.S. Defense, and frontier artificial intelligence systems. We are now building the next generation of space- and airborne-based sensing systems.\nAbout the Role\nWe are seeking an Optomechanical Engineer to contribute to the design, analysis, integration, and qualification of high-performance optical payloads for space and airborne platforms. This role owns the optomechanical architecture and manufacturing readiness of Matter’s imaging systems from early concept through flight hardware.\nYou will champion optomechanical design across multiple programs, ensuring optical performance is preserved through structural, thermal, and dynamic environments (STOP). You will work closely with optical engineering, systems engineering, thermal, structures, and manufacturing partners, and will be hands-on with flight and test hardware.\nKey Responsibilities\nOptomechanical Architecture & Design\nLead the optomechanical design of precision optical assemblies, subsystems, and payloads for space-qualified remote-sensing systems.\n\nDefine mechanical architectures for optical mounts, structures, mechanisms, and interfaces that preserve alignment and performance through launch and on-orbit conditions.\n\nTranslate optical sensitivities and requirements into mechanical, thermal, and manufacturing requirements; decompose system requirements into optical and mechanical requirements, generate error trees, budgets, and allocations across wavefront, spectral, and mechanical parameters, and derive component specifications, drawings, and statements of work.\n\nDrive concept development, detailed design, and design maturity through all review gates.\n\nSTOP Analysis & Performance Assurance\nOwn optomechanical performance across Structural, Thermal, and Optical Performance (STOP) domains.\n\nPerform and review tolerance analyses, GD&T, structural FEA, thermal and thermo-elastic analyses.\n\nCollaborate with optical engineers to support optical modeling and error budgets using Zemax, Speos, MATLAB, or equivalent analysis tools.\n\nEnsure designs meet stiffness, strength, thermal stability, and survivability requirements.\n\nIntegration, Alignment & Test\nDefine alignment strategies, optical test equipment, tooling, fixtures, procedures, and assembly and test plans for precision optical systems.\n\nLead optomechanical integration, bonding, assembly, and alignment of flight and test hardware, including hands-on work in cleanroom or contamination-controlled environments as required.\n\nSupport optical metrology, calibration, test, characterization, and performance verification, including verification of as-built optical designs and test configurations.\n\nSupport environmental testing including vibration, shock, and thermal-vacuum; drive anomaly resolution and root-cause analysis.\n\nManufacturing & Documentation\nDesign for manufacturability, assembly, and test (DFM/DFA) while maintaining optical performance.\n\nManage procurement of optical components and subsystems, vendor fabrication, inspection requirements, and technical vendor relationships.\n\nProduce and maintain detailed CAD models, drawings, BOMs, and assembly/test procedures.\n\nSupport transition from prototype to low- and mid-rate production as needed.\n\nTechnical Leadership\nServe as the optomechanical technical lead for payload hardware.\n\nLead technical reviews and present designs to internal and external stakeholders.\n\nIdentify technical risks early and drive mitigation strategies.\n\nMentor junior engineers and help establish best practices in optomechanical design and integration.\n\nPartner with program management to balance performance, schedule, and cost.\n\nWhat Success Looks Like\nOptomechanical designs that meet performance requirements through launch and on-orbit environments.\n\nStable, repeatable optical alignment with well-understood tolerances and margins.\n\nHardware that integrates cleanly, tests efficiently, and qualifies without major rework.\n\nClear documentation and interfaces that enable fast iteration and scaling.\n\nA team executing with rigor, ownership, and technical confidence.\n\nQualifications\nRequired\nBachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.\n\n5+ years of experience in optomechanical design and development of precision optical systems.\n\nDemonstrated experience owning optomechanical designs from requirements through integration and test.\n\nStrong background in optical mounting, alignment, tolerancing, metrology, and materials, adhesives, and mounting approaches that preserve performance through varied thermal and vibration environments.\n\nProficiency with CAD tools (SolidWorks, Creo, or equivalent), GD&T, and FEA.\n\nHands-on experience with hardware integration, alignment, fabrication or assembly of optical hardware, environmental testing, and test and characterization of optical components and assemblies.\n\nExperience producing high-quality technical documentation.\n\nStrong communication skills and ability to lead cross-functional technical efforts.\n\nPreferred\nAdvanced degree in optics, physics, engineering, mathematics, or a related technical field.\n\nExperience with spaceflight or other high-reliability aerospace systems.\n\nExperience with EO/IR, hyperspectral, laser, or precision imaging payloads.\n\nFamiliarity with Zemax or similar optical design tools.\n\nExperience with fabrication of optics or coatings, adhesives, bonding, and contamination-controlled assembly.\n\nExperience supporting NASA, DoD, SBIR, or commercial space programs.\n\nComfort operating in fast-paced startup or rapid-development environments.\n\nLocation\nThis role is based in El Segundo, CA, with onsite presence required (temporary remote flexibility may be considered). Some travel may be required.\nITAR Requirements\nTo comply with U.S. export regulations, applicants must be one of the following:\nA U.S. citizen or national\n\nA lawful permanent resident (green card holder)\n\nEligible to obtain required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State\n\nEmployee Offerings & Benefits\nAt Matter, we believe in rewarding high performance and providing the support you need to thrive. Our compensation and benefits package includes:\nCompensation: Competitive total package based on experience.\n\nEquity: Early-stage equity package so you share directly in Matter’s growth and success.\n\nHealth & Wellness: 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision coverage.\n\nGrowth: Opportunities to expand into leadership, strategic accounts, or cross-functional roles as we scale.\n\nWho You Are\nYou are a mission-driven technical leader who thrives at the intersection of engineering complexity, high-stakes decisions, and building real hardware that flies. You think holistically, communicate clearly, and elevate the entire engineering team around you.","description_format":"text","description_chars":7294,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":5,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"bachelor","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Equity"],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":[],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-09-26T15:11:07Z"}],"visa":[{"country":"US","licensed_sponsor":true,"evidence":"H-1B filings in 12 months: 3","filings_12m":3,"filings_prev_12m":0,"green_card_filings_12m":0,"median_offered_wage_usd":162500,"route":null,"cap_exempt":false,"checked_at":"2026-10-03T21:08:04+00:00","sources":["US Department of Labor: LCA disclosure data (H-1B, H-1B1, E-3)"],"filings_for_role_12m":0}],"liveness":{"score":18,"band":"cold","label":"Long shot","p_open":1,"p_active":0.411,"p_room":0.45,"age_days":48,"expected_fill_days":31,"reasons":["conf:0","velocity","win:tail"],"computed_at":"2026-10-06T05:45:30Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/matter-intelligence-opto-mechanical-engineer","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/matter-intelligence-opto-mechanical-engineer.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-07T00:21:29Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":539,"day_limit":5000,"remaining_today":4461,"minute_limit":60,"resets_at":"2026-10-08T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":2179048},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=2179048"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fmatter-intelligence-opto-mechanical-engineer"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fmatter-intelligence-opto-mechanical-engineer"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fmatter-intelligence-opto-mechanical-engineer"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/matter-intelligence-opto-mechanical-engineer\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fmatter-intelligence-opto-mechanical-engineer"}]}
