Mechanical Engineering Intern

DESCRIPTION

As part of our Northwest/Southwest Mechanical Team, the Mechanical Engineering Intern will support the planning and design of mechanical and plumbing systems for a variety of federal, state, transportation, aviation, and commercial projects. This internship is a great opportunity for a student who is interested in building systems design and wants to gain hands-on experience in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment. This position is based in Salt Lake City, UT, Denver/Lakewood, CO, or Idaho Falls, ID, and offers a hybrid, flexible work schedule that supports collaboration, mentorship, and team connection.

In this role, you will work alongside experienced engineers and designers, gaining exposure to real-world projects and the tools, processes, and coordination that support successful project delivery. You will assist with design and documentation tasks, develop your technical skills through practical application, and learn how mechanical and plumbing systems are planned, designed, and coordinated across different project types and phases.

Responsibilities:

• Support mechanical and plumbing design efforts under the guidance of engineering staff.
• Assist with the preparation of construction drawings and models using Revit and other design tools.
• Prepare engineering calculations and other technical documentation with direction from project engineers.
• Verify equipment selections and assist with system layout development based on project design requirements.
• Support the preparation of written and graphic reports, design narratives, and other project deliverables.
• Assist with site survey data collection, input, verification, and organization.
• Review and organize product data, shop drawings, and submittals during the construction administration phase.
• Coordinate with engineers, designers, and other disciplines to support integrated project delivery.
• Participate in team meetings and contribute to project-related tasks as assigned.
• Travel locally on an intermittent basis, as needed, to support site visits or project coordination activities.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Required Qualifications:

• Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related field from an ABET-accredited institution.
• Completion of at least two years of coursework in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum GPA of 3.0.
• Strong interest in HVAC, plumbing, and building systems design.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Self-motivated, organized, and able to work productively with intermittent supervision.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior internship, co-op, academic, or project experience related to mechanical, plumbing, or building systems design.
• Familiarity with Revit or other 3D modeling software.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Familiarity with Bluebeam or other PDF markup/manipulation software

Compensation:

The approximate compensation range for this position is $20 - $25 per hour. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
