Reporting to the Technical Director, you'll lead a team of three to four Software Engineers and work side by side with QA, a Designer and a Product Manager, as well as our wider Product, Architecture and Data partners.\nThis is a leadership role that stays close to the code. You'll mentor your engineers, contribute to technical design and delivery, and help the team understand the business problem and the customer need, so that together we deliver simple, effective solutions. As roles evolve with AI, that understanding of the customer and the business matters more than ever.\nOur squad looks after a large, high-traffic retail website, which brings real release risk. You'll help the team understand and manage that risk and respond calmly and confidently when issues arise. You'll also help the team use AI-assisted development and agentic workflows responsibly, keeping quality, security and human accountability at the centre.\nDay to day responsibilities will include but are not limited to:\nLead and mentor the engineers in your squad, building a team culture of ownership, craft and continuous learning.\n Stay hands-on in development, contributing to solution design, architecture and complex delivery.\nWork with the Product Manager, Designer and QA to help write clear requirements and technical designs.\nRun technical spikes to test proposed solutions before the team commits to them.\nReview pull requests, lead code reviews and pair with engineers to lift the quality of our work.\nDefine code quality standards and engineering best practices for the squad.\nImprove the development lifecycle for moving code from development to production, including CI/CD, automated testing and frequent, low-risk releases.\nUnderstand release risk and help the team respond effectively when production issues occur.\nDrive improvements in performance, accessibility, SEO, security and reliability across our web experience.\nPartner with Product, Architecture and Data to shape solutions that customers love.\nSurface delivery risks, trade-offs and dependencies early, with the clarity and confidence that supports good decision-making.\nStay close to the industry, evaluating emerging tools, frameworks and practices (including AI) with a critical eye and a clear sense of when they add real value.\n\nWhat You Will Bring\nYou are a leader who enjoys developing people and still loves building. You are friendly, open and collaborative, and you communicate clearly with engineers and non-engineers alike. You are curious, you keep your skills and knowledge current, and you're comfortable navigating complexity in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment. You think about the customer and the business problem first, and you bring a pragmatic, solution-focused approach to everything you do.\nIn addition, the successful candidate will also have the following skills and experience:\nPeople leadership experience, including mentoring and developing engineers.\nStrong, current hands-on engineering experience, with 8+ years building production-grade web applications and at least 3 years in a technical leadership role.\nExperience defining and embedding a new workflow or way of working within a team.\nA demonstrated habit of staying up to date with technology and applying it sensibly.\nExperience maintaining a large, high-traffic website (retail or e-commerce experience is highly regarded) and an understanding of release risk.\nStrong JavaScript and TypeScript experience, ideally across Next.js, React and GraphQL (Apollo). Our team is mainly built on these technologies, but we don't need an exact match for every tool in our stack.\nExperience designing and developing backend services and APIs (REST and/or GraphQL), and working with relational and/or NoSQL databases.\nStrong system design skills and a solid grounding in engineering best practices, including CI/CD, Git workflows and automated testing (unit, integration and E2E).\nExperience with cloud-native environments, preferably AWS.\nKnowledge of web performance, accessibility and SEO principles.\nIt would also be great if you have:\nPractical experience applying AI across the software development lifecycle, such as AI-assisted development, testing, code review and agentic workflows, with clear guardrails and review standards.\nExperience with .NET or C#-based backends.\nExperience supporting mobile applications or React Native integrations.\nFamiliarity with serverless architectures, containers and infrastructure-as-code in
