We support over 625,000 members nationwide with life-saving emergency response systems and remote patient monitoring solutions. Trusted by families, healthcare providers, and care managers, our work is powered by a culture of innovation, compassion, and purpose.\nMedical Guardian is modernizing a large, mission-critical technology ecosystem that supports multiple business lines, including direct-to-consumer, healthcare partners, senior living, and Medicaid-focused offerings.\nWe are well underway on a strategic migration from our legacy PHP systems to cloud-native services on Microsoft Azure, with C# as our primary language, alongside a growing IoT backend, offering opportunities to shape architecture, reduce complexity, and improve system reliability at scale. Looking ahead, we are investing in agentic AI to accelerate how our engineering team builds, and we want people who are excited to help shape that.\nRole Summary\nThe Principal Software Engineer is a senior hands-on technical authority within Medical Guardian’s application engineering organization.\nThis role owns architectural decisions, shared frameworks, and technical quality standards across backend services, IoT-related systems, and customer-facing applications. The Principal Software Engineer is expected to write significant production code, particularly at the framework and abstraction layer, and to serve as the named technical owner for key systems.\nThis role includes mentorship and line management responsibilities for a small number of engineers, while remaining primarily hands-on and technically focused. The Principal Software Engineer is accountable for both their own technical contributions and the quality of work produced by engineers they supervise.\nThe Principal Software Engineer reports directly to the Senior Director of Engineering and works closely with PMO, Infrastructure, and senior engineering leadership.\nCore Responsibilities\n1. Architectural Ownership & Technical Decision-Making\nServe as a primary technical owner for application architecture for new development, while partnering with existing system owners on architectural decisions. \nMake and document architectural decisions related to: \nApplication structure and patterns \nTechnology and framework choices \nIntegration approaches and service boundaries \nAct as the escalation point for complex technical decisions that would otherwise reach executive leadership. \n2. Hands-On Development & Framework Design\nDesign, build, and maintain shared frameworks, libraries, and abstractions that reduce duplication and enforce consistent patterns. \nOwn cross-cutting concerns such as: \nAuthentication and authorization \nError handling and resiliency patterns \nLogging, metrics, and observability \nIntegration standards and service contracts \nWrite and review production code primarily in: \nPHP for existing systems \nC#/.NET for new services and modernization efforts \nEncode architectural intent directly into reusable code rather than relying on documentation alone. \n3. Technical Quality & Risk Management\nDefine and uphold the technical quality bar for new development. \nMake judgment calls on: \nSpeed vs. quality tradeoffs \nFix-now vs. defer decisions \nWhen technical debt is acceptable and when it is not \nPartner with release and operations leadership to ensure changes are production-safe. \n4. Mentorship & Technical Leadership\nMentor engineers through: \nCode reviews \nPairing on complex problems \nDesign discussions grounded in real implementations \nUnblock engineers who are stuck by stepping directly into code or design challenges. \nHelp raise the overall technical maturity of the team through example, not process. \n5. Cross-Functional Collaboration\nPartner with PMO to: \nProvide technical input on scoping and estimates \nSurface architectural risks early \nCollaborate with DevOps and infrastructure teams on: \nDeployment patterns \nCI/CD evolution \nEnvironment consistency \nCommunicate technical decisions clearly to engineering leadership and stakeholders. \nQualifications & Technical Skills\nRequired:\n10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong record of hands-on development in production systems. \nExperience owning architectural decisions and technical direction for complex applications. \nStrong backend engineering experience using C# and .NET for building services and APIs. \nExperience designing and maintaining clean, well-defined APIs and service interfaces, including integrations with third-party systems (for example, CRM, billing, or operational platforms). \nHands-on experience with Microsoft Azure, including: \nAKS (Azure Kubernetes Service) for hosting containerized services \nCore Azure integration and messaging services used in cloud-native architectures \nExperience delivering applications using Docker containers and CI/CD pipelines. \nStrong experience working with relational databases (Microsoft SQL Server), including schema design and data access patterns. \nExperience with event-driven or asynchronous architectures, including messaging-based systems. \nComfort working in existing PHP codebases while actively leading their migration to cloud-native C#/.NET services on Azure. \nHands-on experience building agentic AI workflows in production - including agent frameworks, tool/function calling, RAG, and MCP (Model Context Protocol) - with practical awareness of the common pitfalls, particularly defining clear standards for agents and supplying them with correct, curated context centrally rather than relying on each developer to hand-feed domain knowledge. \nCandidates must be able to work from Philadelphia, PA office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.\nMust be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship. \nPreferred/Nice to Have:\nFamiliarity with IoT systems or telemetry-driven backends. \nExperience integrating with Salesforce, e-commerce platforms, or other enterprise SaaS systems. \nWorking knowledge of Linux-based systems and system administration concepts. \nExperience with monitoring, logging, and metrics, including operating and tuning systems in production environments. \nFamiliarity with PHP-based enterprise systems. \nExperience helping a team adopt agentic AI well - for example, defining agent standards and guardrails, building or curating a shared context layer (RAG pipelines, MCP servers over core business systems), and establishing evaluation so agents produce reliable, trustworthy output. \nBenefits\nHealth Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)\nPaid Time Off (Vacation, Sick Time Off & Holidays)\nCompany Paid Short Term Disability and Life Insurance\nRetirement Plan (401k) with Company Match","description_format":"text","description_chars":6836,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["401k plan","Life insurance","Retirement plans"],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Patient Monitoring"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-09T04:21:01Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":72,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.804,"p_room":0.9,"age_days":20,"expected_fill_days":33,"reasons":["conf:5","win:mid"],"computed_at":"2026-10-21T05:46:15Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/medical-guardian-principal-software-engineer","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/medical-guardian-principal-software-engineer.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-21T18:07:05Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":25549,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-22T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":6309},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=6309"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fmedical-guardian-principal-software-engineer"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fmedical-guardian-principal-software-engineer"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fmedical-guardian-principal-software-engineer"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/medical-guardian-principal-software-engineer\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fmedical-guardian-principal-software-engineer"}]}
