A Day in the Life

This role is part of the Manufacturing Technology organization and is focused on establishing and scaling an Inductive Automation Ignition Center of Excellence (CoE) to support standardized Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) development across global manufacturing operations. The team partners with manufacturing, operations, and technology stakeholders to develop reusable solutions, strengthen technical capabilities, and enable reliable enterprise-scale deployments.

The Senior Principal Software Engineer position is remote within the United States and requires approximately 15% travel to support workshops, site assessments, deployments, and training activities across global locations.

The Senior Principal Software Engineer serves as a technical leader for the Ignition Center of Excellence, driving standards, architecture, and best practices for SCADA solutions used across manufacturing operations. This role partners with global stakeholders to develop scalable software solutions, expand organizational capabilities, and support the deployment of digital manufacturing technologies.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, debug, and implement software solutions using Ignition, PostgreSQL, Python, and related technologies.

  • Establish and maintain SCADA development standards, templates, governance processes, and technical documentation for enterprise use.

  • Lead the development of reusable frameworks and assets that accelerate solution delivery and improve consistency across manufacturing sites.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to Center of Excellence team members and Ignition developers.

  • Collaborate with manufacturing, operations, and technology stakeholders to define system and software design requirements.

  • Support enterprise deployments through technical assessments, implementation planning, troubleshooting, and operational readiness activities.

  • Develop and maintain software engineering policies, standards, and procedures that support reliability, scalability, and compliance requirements.

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that increase system performance, efficiency, and adoption across global operations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with 10+ years of software engineering experience, or Advanced degree with 8+ years of software engineering experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing, configuring, and supporting Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) solutions in manufacturing or industrial environments.

  • Experience developing software solutions using Python and SQL-based database technologies.

  • Experience creating technical documentation, standards, or reusable development frameworks.

  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams and stakeholders across multiple locations.

  • Experience in manufacturing, operations, medical device, or other regulated industry environments.

  • Experience supporting global or multi-site technology implementations.

  • Hands-on experience with Inductive Automation Ignition platform configuration, development, and deployment.

  • Experience with analytics and visualization platforms such as Power BI, Tableau, or related data platforms.

  • Experience with Agile methodologies, Product Ownership practices, Linux environments, containerization technologies (Docker or Podman), and programmable logic controller (PLC) systems.

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$178,400.00 - $267,600.00This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance,Health Savings Account,Healthcare Flexible Spending Account,Life insurance, Long-term disability leave,Dependent daycare spending account,Tuition assistance/reimbursement, andSimple Steps (global well-being program).
