This role is responsible for specimen processing, laboratory documentation, equipment maintenance, inventory management, quality improvement activities, and providing technical support to pathologists and laboratory staff. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to patient safety, accurate specimen handling, and Mercy's Mission, Values, and Service Standards.\nMinimum QualificationsHigh School Diploma or equivalent\nGreater than 2 years of laboratory experience\nStrong organizational and computer skills\nAbility to work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment\nPreferred QualificationsPrevious Anatomic Pathology laboratory experience\nExperience with laboratory and hospital information systems\nKnowledge of medical terminology\nStrong computer proficiency\nEssential Responsibilities\nComputer & Information SystemsAccession pathology cases into the Laboratory Information System (LIS)\nEnter laboratory tests and patient information accurately into LIS\nResearch patient information using Hospital Information Systems (HIS) and LIS\nTroubleshoot computer-related issues as needed\nSpecimen Preparation & HandlingReceive, prepare, and process pathology specimens prior to accessioning\nApply proper specimen fixatives and perform specimen preparation procedures\nPrepare Gynecologic Cytology specimens as required\nAssist with autopsy procedures as needed\nCut frozen sections and prepare slides for pathologist review\nCoverslip, label, and organize pathology slides\nPrepare and document specimens for referral testing and send-outs\nFile and retrieve tissue blocks, slides, and archived laboratory materials\nEquipment MaintenancePerform routine maintenance and documentation for laboratory equipment, including: Cryostats Tissue processors Bone saws Other pathology laboratory instruments\nMaintain accurate maintenance records and notify leadership of equipment concerns\nQuality Control & DocumentationInitiate specimen problem reports and laboratory variance reports\nMaintain laboratory documentation and records\nParticipate in inventory management and supply control activities\nSupport quality improvement initiatives and regulatory compliance efforts\nTechnical Support & CollaborationAssist Pathologists, Pathologists' Assistants (PAs), Histotechnicians (HTs), and Cytotechnologists (CTs) during laboratory procedures\nPrepare laboratory reagents and solutions accurately\nUtilize analytical scales and other laboratory tools as required\nFoster positive working relationships across departments while adhering to Mercy Service Standards\nMentor and support other AP Lab Assistant team members as assigned\nLeadership & Administrative SupportProvide training and guidance to AP Lab Assistants as needed\nAssist with staffing and scheduling processes\nManage Epic billing workqueues as assigned\nCoordinate laboratory purchasing and supply ordering\nOversee documentation for equipment maintenance activities\nManage legal record requests and special projects as assigned\nContinuing Education & Professional DevelopmentComplete a minimum of 12 continuing education units (CEUs) annually\nMaintain documentation of completed education activities\nComplete all required compliance and mandatory education within established timelines\nParticipate in department training and competency assessments\nWhat You'll Bring\nStrong attention to detail and accuracy\nAbility to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities\nExcellent communication and teamwork skills\nCommitment to quality patient care and laboratory excellence\nAbility to meet turnaround time expectations and productivity standards\nAdditional InformationThe Anatomic Pathology Lab Assistant I organizes, prioritizes, and completes work to meet departmental turnaround times and professional expectations.
