Head of Business Development - International Reinsurance

12 month fixed-term contract

The Head of Business Development is responsible for originating, developing, and structuring international reinsurance opportunities that support the growth, capital optimisation, and strategic objectives of the International Reinsurance business.

The role requires engagement with insurers, advisers, and strategic partners, identifying opportunities to deploy reinsurance solutions that meet clients' capital, risk management, and financial objectives whilst delivering profitable growth for the business.

As a senior commercial leader, this role will build and maintain a robust pipeline of opportunities, structure complex transactions, and work collaboratively with internal stakeholders to bring transactions from initial client discussions through to development and ultimately execution.

Key Responsibilities

Business Origination & Market Development

• Develop and execute the international reinsurance business development strategy.
• Define the structure and processes involved and the different stages of the business origination and development process
• Identify and cultivate opportunities with life insurers, and financial institutions across target markets.
• Build and maintain a high-quality pipeline of prospective transactions.
• Develop market-entry strategies for new territories and jurisdictions.
• Monitor market developments, regulatory changes, and industry trends to identify commercial opportunities.
• Establish and maintain a strong market profile for the organisation within the international reinsurance community.

Client Relationship Management

• Develop trusted senior-level relationships with prospective clients.
• Act as the primary commercial contact throughout the development and structuring phase.
• Understand clients' strategic, capital, risk, and financial objectives and translate these into viable reinsurance solutions.
• Maintain long-term relationships with clients following transaction completion to support retention and additional opportunities.
• Represent the organisation at industry conferences, market forums, and client events.

Strategic Partnerships & Distribution

• Develop strategic relationships with:
  • Insurance clients
  • Brokers
  • Consultancy firms
  • Industry bodies
• Create distribution strategies that maximise market reach and client engagement.
• Identify partnership opportunities that support future transaction flow and market expansion.

Leadership & Stakeholder Management

• Foster a collaborative and client-focused culture.
• Work closely with senior executives to shape growth strategy and market priorities.
• Influence internal stakeholders to ensure effective resource allocation across strategic opportunities.

Governance, Risk & Regulatory Oversight

• Maintain understanding of international solvency and regulatory frameworks including:
  • Solvency II
  • UK Solvency Regime
  • Bermuda Solvency Framework
  • Hong Kong RBC
  • Singapore RBC
  • Other relevant international capital regimes
• Support robust due diligence and approval processes.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Essential

• Significant experience in life insurance, pensions, reinsurance, or financial services.
• Proven track record originating and executing complex reinsurance transactions.
• Deep understanding of international insurance and reinsurance markets.
• Experience managing senior client relationships.
• Excellent financial, actuarial, and commercial awareness.
• Strong strategic thinking and business planning capabilities.
• Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams through complex transactions.

Desirable

• Experience across multiple international insurance markets.
• Knowledge of funded reinsurance, longevity reinsurance, asset-intensive reinsurance, or capital management solutions.
• Familiarity with cross-border regulatory frameworks.
• Relevant professional qualifications in actuarial, finance, insurance, or business disciplines.
• Experience working with regulators and rating agencies.
