Founded in 1940, it has more than 6,000 employees across nearly 100 US locations and serves federal, state and municipal governments, allied foreign governments and commercial clients in transportation, water, aviation, rail and buildings. It hires transportation, civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineers, project and construction managers, inspectors, planners, CADD technicians, tax staff and summer engineering interns.

What We're Looking For:

Michael Baker International is seeking to hire an entry-level Mechanical Associate to join our office in TX. As part of our national engineering team, the Engineering Associate will support the planning and design of building systems for a variety of federal, state, transportation, aviation, and commercial projects. Our discipline teams include mechanical, electrical, plumbing, telecommunications, fire protection, and structural engineering. This internship is a great opportunity for a student who is interested in building systems and infrastructure design and wants to gain hands-on experience in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment.

We have availability for internship positions in our Dallas/Fort Worth, San Antonio, Austin, and Houston office locations and offer a hybrid, flexible work schedule that supports collaboration, mentorship, and team connection.

What You'll Do:

In this role, you will work alongside experienced engineers and designers to build a strong technical foundation through hands-on experience across a variety of project types and delivery methods. You will support the design and documentation of engineering systems, strengthen your skills in engineering analysis and coordination, and gain exposure to projects from early planning through construction. With mentorship and progressive responsibility, you’ll have the opportunity to grow your career while contributing to meaningful, real-world projects.

Additional responsibilities will include:

  • Support engineering design efforts on one or more projects under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Perform engineering calculations and technical analyses related to assigned discipline areas, which may include mechanical, electrical, plumbing, telecommunications/technology, fire protection, or structural systems.
  • Assist with system selection, equipment or component sizing, layout development, and design coordination for new and existing facilities.
  • Support the preparation of construction drawings, design narratives, engineering calculations, technical reports, and other project documentation.
  • Assist with the development, editing, and coordination of construction specifications and project deliverables.
  • Use design tools such as Revit, AutoCAD, analysis/modeling software, and other discipline-specific tools to support project delivery.
  • Apply applicable building codes, engineering codes, discipline-specific standards, and project criteria to assigned tasks.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines to support integrated, constructable designs.
  • Participate in internal project meetings and, as appropriate, client or contractor coordination meetings.
  • Accurately incorporate redlines, review comments, and quality feedback into project deliverables.
  • Support assigned work in accordance with project budgets and schedules.
  • Participate in quality control, technical review, training, and professional development activities.
  • Travel occasionally, as required, to support site visits, field investigations, or project coordination efforts.

What You Need to Succeed:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering from an ABET-accredited four-year college or university.

  • Strong interest in building systems design and applying engineering principles to real-world projects.

  • Motivated self-starter with strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn in a team environment.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships.

  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite.

  • U.S. Citizenship required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and/or obtained Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.

  • Internship, co-op, academic, or project experience related to HVAC, plumbing, or building systems design.

  • Familiarity with Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, analysis/modeling software, or other discipline-specific engineering tools.
  • Exposure to the design of one or more of the following: HVAC systems, electrical power systems, lighting systems, plumbing systems, fire protection systems, telecommunications/technology systems, or structural systems.

  • Interest in working in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary design environment.

Compensation:

The approximate compensation range for this position is $70,000 - $82,500 per year. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting.
