This role sits within Global EHS Engineering, Strategy & Standards (ESS) organization and partners closely with EHS program owners, regional EHS teams, and Datacenter Engineering and Operations to enable a safe and healthy working environment across Microsoft’s global datacenter portfolio. The successful candidate will identify hazards, analyze consequences and risks, and recommend practical, engineering-based controls to mitigate risk in alignment with Microsoft standards and regulatory requirements, supporting the safe delivery of Microsoft infrastructure technologies worldwide. This is an individual contributor (IC4) role requiring strong technical judgment, cross-functional collaboration, and program execution skills.\nThis role is available to candidates anywhere within the US. Successful candidates who live within 50 miles of a Microsoft hub will be required to work from the office a minimum of 3 days per week. Hub locations - Redmond, WA, Atlanta, GA, San Antonio, TX, Phoenix, AZ, or Washington DC.\nResponsibilities\nProvide electrical safety expertise supporting the design and deployment of new hardware, facilities, systems, equipment, and machinery.\nOwn or co-own electrical safety program elements (standards, training expectations, inspection/assessment criteria) consistent with Microsoft electrical safety requirements.\nLeads ambiguous, cross-region electrical safety problems to resolution; sets technical direction for program content and standards.\nInfluences design/operations stakeholders through data, risk framing, and practical engineering controls.\nReview electrical design artifacts relevant to safety: one-lines, protection/coordination intent, equipment room access/clearance impacts, and maintainability constraints\nPerform Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) process safety risk assessments for existing facilities, new facility designs, and emerging technologies.\nApply process safety and hazard analysis methodologies (e.g. HAZID, HAZOP, etc.) to identify hazards, evaluate risk, and recommend effective controls.\nDevelop, implement, and continuously improve global EHS programs to reduce process and operational safety risk.\nPartner with datacenter engineering teams to integrate technical safety considerations into designs and enable safe operation of facilities and infrastructure.\nAnalyze EHS performance metrics and indicators to identify trends, prioritize risk-reduction opportunities, and inform program improvements.\nConduct inspections, assessments, and design reviews to verify compliance with applicable regulations, standards, and Microsoft policies.\nPerform workplace risk and exposure assessments across electrical, mechanical, and operational hazard categories.\nSupport incident investigations, including root cause analysis and identification, communication, and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.\nEmbody our culture and values.\nQualifications\nRequired/minimum qualifications\nBachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics with significant, demonstrated electrical engineering experience, including work with power systems, electrical design, or electrical safety in complex environments, related field AND 4+ years experience in environmental health and safety worldwide Regulations OR equivalent experience.\nBackground Check Requirements:\nAbility to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:\nMicrosoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.\nAdditional or preferred qualifications\nBachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics with significant, demonstrated electrical engineering experience, including work with power systems, electrical design, or electrical safety in complex environments.\n5+ years of experience in electrical engineering, electrical safety, or power systems engineering in datacenter, industrial, or other complex infrastructure environments, including demonstrated experience reviewing electrical systems, conducting electrical hazard risk assessments, and recommending engineering and operational controls.\nDemonstrated expertise in electrical safety, including hazard identification, risk assessment, and control design for electrical systems, equipment, and high-energy infrastructure. This includes medium-voltage / high-energy distribution, switchgear, UPS, battery rooms/energy storage, generators, commissioning/maintenance interface,\nDemonstrated experience applying applicable electrical safety regulations and standards-including NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, OSHA electrical safety requirements (including 29 CFR 1910 Subpart S), and IEEE 1584-to electrical design reviews, hazard assessments, and operational risk reduction.\nWorking knowledge of process hazard analysis (PHA) and risk assessment methodologies (e.g., HAZID, HAZOP, What-If, FMEA, or equivalent) applied to engineering and operational risk.\nExperience translating technical electrical and process safety risks into practical, implementable recommendations for engineering and operational stakeholders.\nStrong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and technical communication skills, with the ability to influence safety outcomes through collaboration rather than authority.\nExperience supporting safety in complex, high-energy infrastructure environments, such as datacenters, industrial facilities, or mission-critical systems.\nPE (Electrical) or equivalent registration\nProfessional certification or registration in electrical safety, safety engineering, or an EHS-related discipline.\n5+ years of experience performing process safety and/or EHS risk assessments, including application of Process Safety Management (PSM) principles and risk management tools.\nAdditional degree in Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.\nExperience influencing design and safety outcomes through cross-functional collaboration in global organizations.\n#COICareers | #EPCCareers | #DCDCareers\nEnvironmental Health & Safety IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $97,600 - $188,400 per year.
